When I complained about a similar obstruction while doing a survey on a joint user path recently with a transport official he informed me in all seriousness that I wasn't much of a cyclist if I couldn't get through that gap.

Signs like this make me laugh because I can't take no in quick enough whist doing 40 or 50mph and trying to keep a safe distance from traffic ahead and even if i can read no i won't remember it long enough to write down.

A CYCLING group has called for Hertfordshire County Council to reassess its priorities after a traffic information sign was installed in the middle of a cycle path.

The sign in Hitchin Road, Stevenage, has been labelled “dangerous” by Stevenage and North Herts Cycling Touring Club secretary Jim Brown and follows complaints in the Comet this week from Stevenage cycle instructor Tina Walker about the placing of another sign in Broadhall Way.
A total of 12 signs, built to provide motorists with real-time traffic updates, were installed in the Stevenage area at a cost of £201,724.
The work was carried out in February by maintenance contractors Ringway on behalf of the county council, although the signs are yet to go live.
“This dangerous obstruction is hardly an encouragement to people to get on their bikes and perhaps shows the true priorities for the county council,” said Mr Brown.
“It’s dangerous and a waste of money – at a time when we are told that budgets are tight. The money would have been better spent fixing the many potholes that are dangerous for cyclists and motorists.
“It’s a tragedy that the county council is degrading the network in this and other ways. These obstructions should be removed as soon as possible and an effort made to improve the surface and signing of existing cycle routes and to identify new opportunities to promote – not obstruct – cycling.”
A spokesman for the county council said: “We are aware of issues with the position of the sign on Hitchin Road in Stevenage and are exploring options including cranking the support poles outwards so they are outside the pavement and cycle lane area.”

A CYCLE instructor is worried someone could have an accident after a traffic sign was installed on a cycle path.
One of the posts is on the cycle path in Broadhall Way
Tina Walker, who teaches people how to ride a bike for a living, has hit out at Hertfordshire County Council over the placing of a traffic information sign which protrudes on to a cycle path in Broadhall Way, Stevenage.
The Stevenage resident said: “Admittedly the cycleway is quite wide but if you’re coming down the hill you’re going to be travelling at quite a lick. If you’re not expecting it the post is very easy to hit.”
A spokesman for the county council said: “We are aware of the issue concerning the position of the sign.
“In the short term we have put reflective tape round the posts to increase visibility but we will also be carrying out additional work to make it safer. This will include tapering the cycleway around the sign and providing reflective lining to ensure the edging of the cycle lane is more visible. The works will be undertaken by the end of April.”
Responding, Mrs Walker added: “It’s just ridiculous, there’s no sense in it at all. What they’re doing is completely pointless.”
The sign is one of a dozen in the Stevenage area to be installed by maintenance contractors Ringway in February at a cost of £201,724.
They are yet to go live but will provide real-time traffic updates when operated from a control centre at County Hall.
The complaint about the Broadhall Way sign follows the removal of another in Six Hills Way last week after residents raised concerns about its position.

Simple answer - ride on the road where you're supposed to be, not in all the debris from that hedge.
