It's always been FIFA guidance to match officials to have two watches running whilst officiating a game, just in case one fails. When I refereed, one of the English FA recommended watches was the most basic Casio (below), they were £9.99 at the time, around 18 years ago, and I see they still are. (There are of course better suited watches now). But they were dirt cheap and largely expendable, so most refs had two of those.

I once forgot to put on the second watch on a very cold, grey day at RAF Brize Norton, leaving it behind in the dressing room. I only realised when out on the pitch at kick off, and thought to myself "ah bugger it, it'll be fine I'm sure".
Of course later in the second half the heavens opened, hail and sleet battered down. Probably around 80 minutes in I looked at the one watch to see how much more of this misery we had left, and it stared blankly back at me, having died a death. I was too embarrassed to ask another match official to time check, and I only guestimated the final whistle based on the whining from the players. One or two of the team officials asked after the game if we had played the full amount of stoppage time as it didn't seem like it to them. They were likely right. One said he thought we'd played just short of the 90.

Anyway, if you want very, very cheap and you don't care so much if it's all that reliable or waterproof, there it is. 😄

While I was waiting for my strap to be mended last week.I noticed a rather nice Sekonda watch with a blue face. When I was a lad Sekonda watches were the Ladas of the day.You did not want to be seen wearing one.

Didn't Sekonda watches used to have "Made In USSR" proudly inscribed on the face, much like Swiss ones have "Swiss Made"?

Sekonda were made by various Russian firms, some of which pre-dated the Swiss watch industry. I have a couple of their pocket watches both keeping time to better than “Swiis chronometer” standards and cheap enough to not worry about losing or breaking.

Two months later, and have been living without a watch.

Nevetheless, I am missing the ability to glance at my wrist to check on the time, particularly when out cycling. Grabbing my phone from inside my pocket is just not the same.

However, I don't believe I need all the functions of a digital watch now, as there is so much more that my watch can do, so just looking for a simple analogue dial.

Being socially and environmentally conscious (typical lefty cyclist), I am looking for something appropriate. I was looking at the recycled ocean plastic and decommissioned conflict weapons options, but not sure that buying one watch which may last me 20 years is going to make the slightest difference in either case. So currently leaning towards bamboo, 'cause I love the stuff. Would get a bamboo bike if I could find a half-baked excuse.

So, what do I look for? What would be the difference between these five options, for example? How much is the name and how much is the important stuff like the movement?

A mild interest in watches recently came about from seeing a random clip on utube that somehow appeared on my recommended list.
During my scuba days I had a couple of diving watches, but that hobby bit the dust, and so did the watches. Past few years just a basic cheapo sufficed. Anyways, long story short, got a Vostok on order - love the history behind it, and the fact that it's not pretending to be anything other than a robust and reliable timepiece. Only downside, so I believe, is you can't just stop at one, and soon will have a collection. Haha - watch out for watch n+1.

I agree, although I stopped wearing a watch years ago when it became apparent I was increasingly being surrounded by clocks.

My phone, computers, car, ebike display, Sky telly, microwave, DAB radios, and all court rooms all have clocks.

There is still a wall clock in my bathroom, but that's largely redundant as I now only have a shower.
