... is it usually that good?

I stumbled across a "Natural World" programme on BBC2 without much in the way of expectation. It turned out to be a sort of WG-Sebald-meets-the-Friday-Night-Ride-to-the-Coast exploration of landscape, history, migration and night, presented by the suitably melancholic Robert MacFarlane. The photography was beautiful. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00qsxy5

That was followed on BBC4 by a fascinating doco following the school lives of a handful of children and teachers in Damascus, including an Iraqi Christian refugee. Syria is host to two million Iraqi refugees. Two million!

Does this kind of thing always happen on a Wednesday? Should I forsake the mid-week pint more often? Should this thread be entitled "In praise of the BBC"?

Sounds pretty grim to me, I'd keep with the pint.

Sounds interesting. And no that's not sarcasm! I was on here, and listening to music most of the evening

Or maybe I was watching Babstation, the Playboy channel and some topless darts as most on here would like to believe.

Bumped into Mr Jonathan Meades last night after going down the pub talking about Scotland.

Still can't work out if he is so far up his own backside that he is staring out of his own mouth, or one of the most eloquent proponents of a post-industrialised individualism.

The second. He has a great deadpan delivery.

JM was on a bit late for me, but I did watch Alexei Sayle's piece on travelling from Aleppo to Aqaba; and the Horizon piece, which was a disappointing re-hash of much better programmes on the same subject (Marcus de Sautoy's, for instance).

What the four part series or the how long was a piece of string? The latter was a very good programme although much less about him than the others.

I saw the "Natural world" docu, it was really excellant, I love the Essex coast anyway (through sailing) and the slow pace of the film gave the viewer time to take in the beauty, coupled with the voice over, also at a slow pace worked brilliantly, then his interjection of a third person in the shape of a local poet named Edward Thomas (I think) was awe inspiring. If I can get that series on dvd then I will just for that episode.

Loved it.

That reminds me - anyone got a Private Eye handy? There's a great story in Funny Old World that Greedo might like...

I have - but no scanner.

I could copy the story verbatim if anyone wants - I'm sure Greedo would love it
