Well following my recent conversion to tubulars, I stupidly decided to take a chance and do a club run today with no spare, and not even any Pit Stop or other sealant. Well you can guess what happened!

40 miles in, flint in centre of road, hiss of air followed by flat rear tyre.

Of course it had to happen in the middle of nowhere! Still I wasn't too worried, I'd at least had the sense to ask my wife to be on standby to pick me up...

So got phone out of pocket, just in time to see screen die! Borrowed another riders phone, got wife's answerphone. Left message for her to come and pick me up at nearest town, told the guys to go on, and started walking.

Suffice to say, an hour or so later, I called a taxi! Wifey's idea of standby is leaving the phone upstairs whilst she cooks Sunday roast!

Still, my fault and lesson learned. Next time, Pit Stop x 2, plus spare tub and rim tape!

And at least it wasn't raining, and I got 40 miles in before it all went Pete Tong! Really is sods law though, the only time I go out without any spares, and it just had to happen, and the phone had to be flat (I had charged it overnight, not sure why Map My Ride drained it so quickly)

Hey ho!...

Tough luck. GPS apps really cane the battery, which may have been the cause of your phone's demise. Turn off unwanted stuffs (bluetooth, wifi, nfc) to help eke out battery lif.

Well so far, so impressed, with Vittoria Pit Stop. My tyre had a large split from the splint, I'd say around 3mm. The Pit Stop is only supposed to work for up to 1mm. Well I'll have to see, since I just used it, but so far, I'm very impressed.

The hole in the tyre was such that it could not be inflated with a track pump, i.e. the air was quite literally coming out as quickly as it went in. It's now inflated up to 120 psi. Whether it remains at this pressure may be another matter, I think I may be asking too much of it, in this case. However I would say that in most cases, the Pit Stop will be fine. I think I just got a very nasty flint, which I hit square on, with my rear tyre, dead centre.

Stick a small powerbank in your pocket. Mine cost about a tenner and will recharge my phone without any problem. Its a great bit of kit.

That pit stop stuff isn't a permanent repair is it. Get the tyre sent off for repair if you can't do it.

I'm chucking in the towel with tubs. I think they're great if you're handy with spammers, enjoy fiddling with bits. These wheels are far too pro for me! Best for a time trial it's or the like. I've advertised them for sale. Cutting me losses!

Maybe they are not for you, but Steve Abraham is having success with them on his one year time trial(s). Flats are more of a problem to him than to you and me, and I think they are working out for him. He does have Schwalbe sponsoring his ride, but I'm sure they'd be just as happy if he'd chosen clinchers.

I'm with you, they seem too much faff.

AIUI Steve's running tubeless, not tubs. Tubeless are clincher style tyres, coupled with magical rim tape and sealant. Tubs have an inner tube completely enclosed in a tubular tyre, which is then stuck to the (non clincher) rim.

(PS, good to Steve returning to form)
