I was a "scab" - I work in the public sector, and I am a member of the union. Not that many people in my team were on strike, but we still had to pick up their work for them - life goes on, and in my line of work people still have problems which need fixing, whether theres a strike on or not.
The procession through town was impressive, and they do have my backing. I don't see the strikers as "selfish" or "arrogant" as some people have suggested (not necessarily on here). They're trying to retain something which was a major part of the benefits of their employment.
The public sector isn't perfect - it really isn't. However there are some very very good people who do very difficult jobs for less money than if they took a job in the private sector. They (we) have faced job cuts like everyone else, pay freezes like some, extra pressures like many and now being asked to work for years longer and get less in return in pensions.
There is going to be a breaking point. I don't think this strike is it - but if the Conservatives continue down this road (and I do blame the Conservatives) eventually the good people will walk away.
