Cool - just opened it in Photoshop and everything is just black - How does this work then - getting the brown come through.

I wondered if it was due to anti-aliasing, so downloaded it, reduced the colours to just black or white (no greys), and re-animated ... and it seems it is an optical illusion after all - fascinating:

I believe BBC experimented with producing colour TV images using this method some decades ago.
