Hi All,

Just recently joined as I'm just getting back into cycling. I'm starting to do some slightly longer rides which has got me thinking about what I should have with me on these rides in case anything goes wrong.

I only really want the essentials as don't want to add lots of extra weight or bulk to the bike.

I usually cycle along canal paths and some of the hilly back roads locally - the back roads can be rather remote.

What would you recommend I have with me that wont add to much weight and what would you recommend I hold this stuff in?

Thanks

John

Afternoon John

In addition to food and drink, I take tubes (1 or two depending on route), sticky patches, levers, multitool with chain splitter, pump, spare chain links, mobile, cash card and some change. The tubes and levers fit in my small saddle bag with everything else fitting in pockets.

I sometime think I go over the top in relation to p*nct*re repair but I've been caught out before.

I usually carry the minimum of a pump, spare tube, repair kit, a mobile, a multi tool and a bottle, Oh and the bike. If I'm going for longer I may also carry cash, jaccket, gilet and food (cereal bars, bananas or energy bars/ gels) and lights at this time of year.

Edit I carry the multi tool, repair kit and keys (and sometimes a front light) in a small wedge pack the rear light is clipped to it and the other stuff goes in my jersey.

the things i always carry are a spare tube, puncture repair kit/patches, pump, tyre levers, multitool, mobile phone, money, water bottle. all that will fit in a pretty small saddle bag and on the bike frame with the pump and bottle...it won't cover every eventuality but i guess it just depends how much of a compromise you want to take between being lightweight and being prepared.

then energy gels, food, lights, waterproof clothing etc depending on how far im riding, what the weather is like etc
