I wish people would stop trying to take shortcuts with this important maintenance issue.

You really need to lubricate your chain properly. This is the best method - https://sheldonbrown.com/chainclean.html

Seeing what folks are lubing their chains with, it makes me feel like a snob when I say I use Rock 'N' Roll lube. It's specifically made for chains, and I clean and lube it every hundred miles.

I've heard that WD-40 isn't a lube but on checking, it's said to be a short term lube, or for an emergency like when you ain't got nuffink else. It's also good for starting cars with wet ignition leads. I was called to a man's home (for an electrical problem) one winter morning. His car stunk of petrol and he was walking around, frustrated because it wouldn't start. I guessed the problem, and got my can of WD-40 out and sprayed it over his distributor cap and leads, then told him to try starting it. It fired up, immediately, and he was amazed. That sold him on WD-40. I just hope he didn't use it on his bike chain... if he had a bike.

I’d rather spend £20 and just buy a new one, what a faff. We have a Rozone machine at work I soak mine in that and it comes up like new. Just use a light coating of wet lube and rub it in wearing rubber gloves and then wipe off the residue

Whatever I bought at the bike shop, because I needed the silly bottle to get the stuff on the chain. When I don't lose the bottle I've been known to refill them with olive oil, 10w-40, or whatever oil like substance didn't get used up and is lying about.(Atf, mineral oil, gear lube)
