Being of the lazy I have been using wd40 I realise this is not the best option I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to what to put on their chain having recently just somthered a new set of cycle shoes in wd40 I wondered how often you lube up the chain.

Muc off wet or dry lube depending on the season.Frequency depends on how often riding the bike and how it’s running

I clean my bikes after every ride but I have the time because I'm retired. I keep the chain clean from crap and when it's clean I use GT85 and if the weather's really wet I'll give it an occasional oiling. I wipe off any excess. It's worked for me over the years.

WD40 but not sprayed directly onto the chain. Instead, I spray into a rag and then use that to wipe the chain.

Sometimes I put wet or dry lube on afterwards - depends how bothered I am.

Wax, either Squirt or Silca. This is by far the best way I have found of keeping chain, cassette and rings both clean and "lubed." Is it a lube or not? I'd say not, it's wax.

You will find in winter you need to wax quite often but that's a small price to pay for keeping everything clean.

I've tended to use car engine oil, primarily because I had a gallon of the wrong grade for my car, so was happy to use the "Mickle method" whereby you clean the chain with the same oil then used for lubrication rather than washing it all out with solvent. Granted engine oil might not be perfect but for me it's not a challenging application in engineering terms thus any medium viscosity oil is likely fine, and oiled rather neglected is what is important
