Went to have a look at a 2016 Synapse at the weekend to check sizing. Not the exact model I wanted to see (Tree Frog Green Adventure) but the frame is the same. LBS had no idea when it would be available (and tried desperately to sell me the model with much lower spec' they had on the sales floor despite me repeatedly telling them I was not interested) but took both my contact numbers as well as email address and promised to find out 3 days ago.

Despite reminder email from me I have had no response so that's it with them. So I tried elsewhere...

Evans show them as 'New In' so I checked the store stock gizmo on their website and it says pre-order for delivery 18/04/16.

So, what do they mean by 'New In'? Bit frustrated with the whole process of buying a new bike - shops showing bikes as 'in stock' when they aren't, 2016 bikes (Cube) already sold out and waiting for 2017 and dealers unable to supply certain sizes for testing (fancied a Focus, only 54cm available to try but if you order a 52cm it should be ok!).

Shouldn't be so difficult really.

Firstly, Clickbait - they got you to browse their website = job done. The more hits they get the more ad-revenue they get. Im sure some brands would pay Evanscycles to be advertised on their front page.

Secondly 'New in' means a product which has just arrived. Though it could be its just arrived at some of their bigger warehouses and they havent distributed it down to their smaller retail stores yet. Though if youre putting in your postcode to search for the nearest branch that has stock on their website and its returning quite a few hits then its just false advertising to a lesser extent. They cant physically sell you a product that they dont have. Ive had a few retailers do this to me in the past - and most of them just to it just to get the money coming in.

Ive had issues with retailers who have refused to send me out a replacement for a faulty product despite their system saying they had more then 5 in stock - their excuse was that they already had been reserved or allocated to other customers.

Or i pay for an item from a UK retailer that doesnt arrive for close to 3 weeks despite their website saying they have plenty instock - a quick email to them asking where my stuff is and they say they are still waiting for stock.

Not every retailer does this but there are quite a few out there.

Can mean it's booked into the warehouse, but not actually booked in as ready for deliverly to stores.
Smaller chain stores, it can mean that some stores/franchises have the item, others don't. They can add "New In" as it arrives.
Some may never actually get the item in.

Call them or go into a shop. They have on line access to stock levels in the UK for larger brands UK central stock. Not sure why the shop didn't just do this for you.

The bike is advertised on the website as "New In" when you hit the size drill down and check stock levels the bike is not available until 18/04/16.

My point being: how can a bike be "New In" when it clearly isn't in at all?

Is to do with marketing and when the brand bring stock into the country. The retailer can place pre orders but is limited by what the brand imports to the UK and when. If cannondale decided not to import the bike you want this year there is little the retailer could do, the same with changes to delivery dates.

I've had my CAAD 12 for over three months and I think one of the LBS has a full range in stock.

That said, I am currently waiting for delivery on a Merckx Milano for Mrs O. Swings and roundabouts...
