What film did you watch last night?

Free Guy - Ryan Reynolds (and a fair bit of Jodie Comer - I expect her fans will be drooling over her brunette-in-leather-trous look!)

What a brilliant, fun romp! It's a mashup of many many sci-fi plots, and doesn't make much sense, whilst clearly not giving a damn, but with jokes.
OK, nail me down: it's A More Clever Jumanji. Matrix, Ready Player One, The Truman Show - they're all in the mix.

I ❤️ Ryan - whilst Deadpool is still just his bestest thing so far.

A Minecraft Movie - 2/10

I've seen some cynical cash in films over the years and this is definitely down there with the worst of them. Visually it's pretty incredible but that's the only redeeming quality.

The plot is also rigidly structured for something that's supposed to be about creativity and imagination. I get the impression that people who enjoy the game will hate it, and people who've heard about it via memes will love it.

I also wonder if Jack Black has it in his film contracts that he has to sing at least one song, because that added nothing, likewise the "romance" between Jennifer Coolidge and A Villager.

Slade in Flame following Mark Kermode's review on their podcast.
Best I could give is a, meh. And that's being generous. Not for the first time I am calling his judgment into question.

Blitz (2024)

An Apple TV film about a young lad who doesn't want to be evacuated from London, so he jumps off the train and makes his way home.

The film follows him as he attempts to get back home, plus his mother's search when it's found that he's missing.

There's a few familiar faces in it, Stephen Graham, Kathy Burke, and Paul Weller as the lad's granddad.

One of the best films I've watched for a while.

8/10.

Recorded Paul the other evening, to watch with SWMBO, one night this week

Plus, I missed Rush, the other day!

Chariots of the Gods (yes, the Erich von Däniken one!)
Remember seeing it in the cinema when I was early teens. Been looking for a copy for ages for "historical interest". Load of twaddle conspiracy theories but people were taken in even back then. Plus, quite a bit of his "evidence" is from places I've travelled through (independently and slowly).

Interesting given how these days there are so many daft conspiracy theories continually flying around, how the word "fact" has sort of lost any meaning and there seems more fake news and PR than anything based on reality and this film was one of the early examples of this trend.

And it is still a load of twaddle but I enjoyed re-watching and remembering.

I finally caught up with Conclave. I went in with relatively high expectations given the premise, and was not disappointed.
The acting and direction are top notch while the soundtrack is integral rather than distracting.
A few plot twists are predictable but some most definitely are not. Well worth a watch.

I enjoyed Conclave immensely. Tucci, Fiennes and Lithgow are all superb actors (Lithgow is one of my favourites - who can forget Eric Qualen?) and each was clearly thinking, "blimey, these other two are good - I'd better bring my A game,"

Great plot, and what a twist at the end!

It was on ITV2 a couple of evenings ago, so I recorded it; 'The Dark Knight Rises'

I'd started watching it, in the basement, when SWMBO came down, decided she'd join me
So, as usual with any film that I'm watching there's questions every few minutes (or sooner) about plot/charactors/etc....
Not helped by the 2 Rums she'd had............

When The Lord Of The Rings trilogy was released, I saw the first with her, then went to the 2nd/3rd by myself, in order to be able to watch it

G20 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G20_(film)) Amazon/MGM

Complete twaddle. Bit like a merger of several other films (Air Force One, the film where the White House is taken over). No real plot. Can't comment on the acting 'cos I didn't really notice any.

I want that 2 hrs of my life back, can I claim from Amazon?

Why do film production companies waste their time and money on such rubbish.

(nb I didn't like it)

Ian
Edit: I need to learn to give-up on a film as soon as it becomes apparent it's rubbish (which in the case of G20 is within 5 mins of the beginning title sequence).

I did exactly that, gave up on it within 15 mins. I'm finding that 80% of new films are absolute dumbed down garbage. The plot doesn't need to be that good or that original for it to be a watchable film, but the actors need to be good at acting. And the script writers need to write dialogue above the level of a bored teenager
