Zardoz. (1974). Weird stuff from John Boorman. I remember watching it when it came out, but could not remember what it was about. I am still not sure what it was trying to say, if anything. I will have to watch it again.

It is a strange combination of pretentious tosh and really compelling and each time it's on I find myself watching it again. Great music too !

Ready Player One.

A predictable plot and textbook characters, but fun due to the thousand and one pop culture references from gaming, film and TV including Doc Brown’s De Lorean, and the Iron Giant. My son spotted a ninja turtle too.

6/10 due to the ‘spot the reference’ mini game you can play as you watch the film.

The remake of The Fantastic 4. CGI is good, and the plot interesting, but it doders along at a much slower pace than the version of some 10 years ago, so isn't as absorbing to watch. I'm also disappointed that there's the odd swear word now thrown in, which makes it inappropriate for Mini D who loves the earlier 2 films.

4/10.

Dr Strangelove.

One of my favourite films ever. A towering performance in all three roles played by Peter Sellers, but it's his work as Group Captain Lionel Mandrake that really steals the show.

George C. Scott is at times menacing and at others hilarious as General Turgidson. He had a major falling out with Kubrick over the way the film was made, but I must side with Kubrick on that one for bringing out such a performance from Scott.

And the highly realistic set on board the B52 is brilliant, and mildly controversial at the time for its accuracy. A funny, scary, breathtakingly thriller-farce.

"Gentleman - you can't fight in here. This is the War Room!"

9.5/10.

Went The Day Well?

WWII frame in which The Hun, for some reason never adequately explained, invade an English village. The villagers fight back, and eventually the British Army cotton on and join in, and The Jerries are given a damn good thrashing.

Made during the War, it's clearly a thinly veiled piece of fifth column warning propaganda. Nevertheless, still worth a watch.

5.5/10.

As an alternative nuclear war by accident movie, have a look for "Failsafe" Not a comedy and rather overshadowed by Strangelove which came out at the same sort of time. A brilliant, gripping, and scary film.

Inferno.
Quite involving but not very sophisticated. Perhaps I give sequels too much of a hard time.
Hans Zimmer sleepwalked the soundtrack too, with no standout points and a limp version of Chevaliers de Sangreal as the closing credits.
But I actually followed the plot and the puzzles so that deserves an extra point.

Really interesting and captivating.
Beautifully shot.

The plot doesn't stand up to the closest scrutiny, and the motivations of some of the characters are hard to fathom.
The main antagonist is a bit 2 dimensional. Oh, he's a sadist, a racist and a misogynist! I prefer the villain to have a bit more nuance.

But overall a decent film, and well worth a watch.

Inferno is a brilliant story. One of the first parallel universe stories, and Nicholas Courtney's eye-path wearing fascist version of his usual role was a particular highlight. Bleak ending too !.

Rambo.
Old enough to decide not to whip his shirt off, but still able to blow apart gooey red stuff filled model people.
The bloodiest and strongest of the lot, and probably a rodding to the critics, and a lesson in thinking twice before embarking on missionary work.
Too much of the real world to be called enjoyable, but still it's good to see the bad guys squished just one more time.
6/10.

Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971).
Far superior to the previous Beneath the POTA sequel of the original franchise. Still very watchable after all these years, and those latex masks still look pretty darn good. The mythology of the apes' rise and human decline is quite different to that in the reboot franchise though.

I quite liked Beneath, having re-watched it recently, and also having thought it ropey on first viewing 40 odd years back. Still got two more to go in my boxed set of the originals.
