Slightly mixed feelings but broadly positive. I'll likely be returning for part two at any rate. I don't think it's the masterpiece some have mentioned but isn't bad.

It looked great, was quite well acted, but somehow was a bit plodding. Slow is fine, but plodding isn't.

Slightly too much exposition in the early part of the film, albeit not as bad as the Lynch one in this regard, and by no means terrible, but it kind of loses your attention a bit. In mitigation mostly they tried to disguise it as Paul Atredies (the protagonist) reading up on their new planet and similar tricks.

They lost my attention a bit in the big battle. In fairness it wasn't too over the top, which gets really really boring, but the explosions and lasers undermined the point of the sword fights and elite soldiers. Thankfully the battle was an incident rather than a climax, so it didn't ruin the film, but they should have turned it down a few notches as there was too much destruction.

Admittedly its about 40 years since I read it but it seems true to the book, and as I say, I thought the acting was good, especially the lead and his mother, and it did look good, but plodded, without quite the Kurosawa or Lawrence of Arabia flair to keep you enthralled

Score: dunno, 7/10 maybe
can't disagree with any of that... i still think the 3pt TV version is the best so far.

Not seen that, but am aware of it. I understand it's reasonable well regarded but I saw a few clips / trailers and was put off. Maybe I'll give it a go.

Might have to read the book again, but sometimes re-reading something I read as a teenager can be a huge disappointment. I loved Foundation as a kid, and Narnia when a bit younger but they both are totally unreadable as an adult.

Never read the book and always found Lynch's version disappointing on many many levels, but knew there was a good solid story in there. Was pointed in the direction of the TV version on this thread, it didn't disappoint despite being a relatively cheap production.

Midsommer - offbeat horror with a couple of brutal scenes. Not as smart as it thinks it is, and not for everyone 3/5

Kings of summer - coming out of age teen flick, very funny, especially italian kid. 4/5

Planet of the apes. The new one, which is 20 years old already!
An enjoyable romp.
Watched it with my 10 year old son. He enjoyed it. I doubt he would have enjoyed the original one with the dodgy masks.
The action takes place away from Earth and the ending is weak.

The Tim Burton one? Much as I like (most) of his work, I thought it was absolutely dreadful. The "reboot" trilogy is way better, though possibly a bit hardcore for a 10 year old.

Fun, and utterly pointless fact: Adam Rifkin was lined up to direct that film, which he didn't in the end. But his sister was my English teacher in high school junior year, when his film Night at the Golden Eagle came out. The porn star Ron Jeremy is in it, and I was sitting next to him at a screening. He's kind of legendary for the size of his penis, which I asked to see, but entirely justifiably he did not because I was underage.

Oslo, about the back-channel negotiation of the Oslo Accords in an attempt to make progress in peace negotiations between Israel and the PLO. It's a slightly clunky TV movie adaptation of a stage play but the central characters including the unofficial Norweigian facilitators played by Ruth Wilson and Adrew Scott are engaging. Having lived through this brief positive period for the region, it's depressing to be reminded in the closing montage how far backwards things have gone in the almost 30 years since.

Currently awaiting trail for historic sex abuse and facing life in prison.

Prince of Darkness - Carpenter's hidden gem. I thought Mouth of Madness was his masterpiece, but this is very close. The music, the story, the setting make for an impressive horror.
Group of nerdy eggheads (with survival skills of 5yr old) are brought to investigate ancient device left by an old sect. As these things happen in horror movies, they ignore the obvious warnings and open Pandora's box (seriously, if something is labeled DANGER ANTHRAX someone will open it in a movie) - result is glorious violence and terror.
5/5

Venom: Time for Carnage - 5/10

It's got a great cast, but Woody Harrelson and Stephen Graham are seriously underused. And I just didn't buy the Michelle Williams/Tom Hardy relationship.

That said, I thought it was funny, a bit off kilter and an enjoyable way to kill a bit of time. I do wish they'd gone a bit more hardcore, because biting someone's head off is going to leave a mess.

They've also set it up to bring him into this, which always irritates me.
