The Magnificent Seven (2016 film)
Generally I don't like re-makes/re-boots as there are so many good books why not try something new and interesting. There are exceptions eg Dune where the story is so complex that it allows for many very different interpretations and focus on different aspects so different films are totally different films.

But the 2016 Magnificent Seven is pretty much identical story just modern production. Lot of well known actors.

I had low expectations but was pleasantly surprised. I won't be re-watching, won't be recommending it to others but OK for an evening when you've got to the end of a book and not ready to start next.

Ian

I watched this the other night. We had watched a For a few dollars more and it was the next film on Amazon and free. I thought it was ok as well.

Alien in New York. Mysterious, enigmatic with lots of high quality actoring by Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges.

Brilliant film with so many different aspects. Very thought provoking.

One minor scene I thought amusing and seems to have stuck in my memory was Prot's demonstration of faster than light travel.

World Trade Centre.

The best actor in the entire fillum is Nicholas Cage's moustache.

I know it's the tragic true story of some coppers that got trapped in the collapsing building, but why did it have to be so laboured? Even the delightful Maggie Gyllenhaal couldn't save it for me.

3/10. Best avoided, unless you like films about moustaches.

A trio of Predator films this week (which I always think do better when they do not involve Aliens!)

Predators (2010) 7/10
Adrian Brody is a an unlikely action star but he carries it ok, the film has an interesting cast with Laurence Fishburne popping in as a deranged army guy and Walton Goggins who despite his best efforts to make us dislike a serial killer rapist is just too much fun to dislike.

Prey (2022) 8/10
A neat twist on the usual soldiers vs Predator as a lone Predator is left on 17th Century Comanche Indian land, they do add a load of French hunters/trappers in to provide some glorius kills but its very much a throwback to Arnie vs Predator in that traps and wits are used to fight one another. Theres a version of the film in full Comanche language which I only found out about later, one to watch again with that option.

Predator: Killer of Killers (2025) 8/10
A nice surprise this was made in secret to serve as an appetizer for the forthcoming Badlands film. Features 3 short stories of a Viking Warrior, a Samurai and a WW2 Fighter Pilot all finding themselves matched against a Predator before the film brings them together for a showdown. Its silly and nonsensical but thats what animation is for, enjoy!

I’m not long back from seeing The Phoenician Scheme.
Great names on the bill; Hanks, Dafoe, Cranston, Cumberbatch.

All I can say is, WTF did I just watch?!

4/10

I enjoyed it somewhat more than that and glad I went but it isn't his best and does drag a little

"wtf did I just watch?" applies to all Wes's movies which are by and large very enjoyable

Bullet Train.

Daft as, but not (quite) as terrible as BBC would have you believe:

I enjoyed that a lot "great stupid fun" as a
review of another film put it

Sisu. Low budget, Rambo-esq romp with some stunning scenery and little in the way of dialogue. I think we wait until the end of the film to hear our protagonist’s longest sentence. Still, gets the job done.

Come and See - 10/10

First time on the big screen with my pal who introduced me to it years ago. Still as devastatingly effective as ever and even better at cinema size and with cinema sound. Despite having said I didn't think it would be her thing my good lady came along and declared it "Sh!te", which is fair enough because she doesn't like fully subtitled films or ones that don't have much in the way of structure (she has ADHD), still she appreciated it visually if not for the story and it's her choice for our next outing...

My favourites of her many bits of feedback are:

"So why didn't that guy shoot the chief monkey guy straight up the a*sehole?"

and

"Was that the best use of medical equipment? Badly wrapping up his gun?"

I love that woman!

Just out of the cinema with Jnr. Went to see Fantastic Four in glorious Imax.
And fantastic it is. Far better then the incarnation of the F4 francise 10 years ago with much better cast and characters and a much better story with a brilliant villian. A very well made movie and better for the fact its a stand alone movie in the Marvel Universe rather then embroidered with others in francise.
Top notch fun.

The Predator (2018) was on last week, didn't even know it existed!
In my opinion, the weakest of the films, huge plot holes, poor acting at times, although the graphics / costumes were pretty darn good.
Worth a watch if you have an evening to kill, just don't expect to come away feeling enriched.

Prey however, very cool film, definitely worth a watch

I skipped that one, as its been superseeded by soon to be trilogy that Dan Trachtenberg is doing, but you're right it kind of passed people by as despite it sounding good, it didn't review well and got kinda forgotten.
