Loved the Old Guard 1. The sequel I thought was awful. Killed it off totally for me.

Shock Wave (1977)

A low budget horror featuring that horror staple group of baddies - Nazi zombies.

After the war an SS officer ends up on a deserted island with a group of his creations, and as is sometimes the way of low budget films a big name has been signed up to appear, this time it's Peter Cushing as the SS nutcase.

One day a small holiday fishing boat shipwrecks on the island, and you can probably guess the rest.

Unfortunately it looks like most of the budget was used for Peter Cushing, 3/10.

Tár. One of those films that should have won a hatful of Oscars (though it did win many other awards), and didn't. Powerhouse performance by Cate Blanchett.

That looks good, I'm queuing it up for tonight.

The Man in the Hat 8/10

A lovely film set in the French countryside with the protagonist, played by Ciaràn Hinds, in his Fiat 500 being followed by five threatening looking men in a Citroen Dyane, after he sees them dumping a body in a harbour.

It’s a quirky film, which might not be everyone’s cup of tea but I enjoyed it. It was about 15 minutes in when I realised I had been smiling the whole time, just soaking it in. Some pretty good music that, for a change, supported rather than interrupted the story.

Also, there’s very little dialogue and what there is, is French. Ciaràn Hinds has, I think, two lines!

I found it a refreshing change from the usual fare, yet it had comedy, drama, suspense, the lot.

I love that film. Had me grinning throughout.

The Town. Ben Affleck directs and stars.

A few clichés in the plot but a good cast including Jeremy Renner and a nice cameo from Pete Postlethwaite. Action sequences are well done. Well worth a look.

Re-watched Training Day last night.

It's all a bit far fetched but the performance from Denzel is the absolute definition of powerhouse. So many recognisable faces in the minor roles.

10/10 for me on that - watched it a lot when it came out, and a few times since.

The actor I noticed last watch around was Raymond Cruz who I know as Tuco from Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul.

Something on Amazon Prime about a bomb on a plane, according to the App 'The Fast and the Fierce'. The review says enough but I just let Prime auto play after the previous program the London Railway Murders, and it was easy to follow whilst making tea.

In so many films these days the "fight sequences" look to me more like a well rehearsed dance - which I suppose it what they really are. And I find they get a bit tiresome.

Sort of OK.
In so many films these days the "fight sequences" look to me more like a well rehearsed dance - which I suppose it what they really are. And I find they get a bit tiresome.

That was my review on release. They could have cut 1/2 hour out of the film purely from the fight scenes without losing anything. They are that repetitive.

Yer. Not last night, though - the other day (matinees being a benefit of retirement). Contemporary psychological thriller, actors pretending to be other people (rather than just their image in another role), worth the £8 ticket price.
My ‘take away’ was DiCaprio’s character trying to contact revolutionary HQ, and being put on ‘hold’ to a Communist speech rather than ‘hold music’.
