Whilst we're on Anderson and the masterpiece that is The Grand Budapest Hotel....I recently rewatched Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme and still couldn't warm to it !
I mean his films are never going to be bad for me but this just didn't cut it,sorry Wes ☹️

Taste in films is obviously a personal thing. I recently lent my sister 'Godspell' & 'La Grande Voudraille', a musical & a film which I particularily like. ^_^
She couldn't get on with either.

A thoroughly enjoyable Alien conspiracy theory watch. Both the main stars and a couple of brilliant support actors really lift the film above the norm.

Not seen it myself as not my thing but wife and eldest went to watch Hamnet and they thought it was very dull and boring which made me even more convinced I made the right decision.
As was said above, taste in flms very personal

Michael Biehn just blows it away as Coffey.
Definitely agree here, Biehn did a cracking job as a paranoid nutcase - !
But did you notice just after he put big four cuts into his forearm with his BIG knife, in the very next scene, said cuts had miraculously healed - ?
The powers of paranoid healing eh - ?

Very good. I was almost expecting it to be disappointing given all the hype but I really liked it.

Ok... Very deep breath...

There is a film I have been hearing about recently which everyone seems to hate, but nobody has actually seen 🙄

Me being me, I wanted to go and see it to see what the fuss was about... I nearly backed out, but I kept my nerve, left my prejudices at the door, suspended reality, told the guy at the desk,
"Please do not judge, I am merely curious"
And he gave me this, surely a future collector's item, only for the wrong reasons...:

I joined 6 or 7 other curious explorers.

Now, may I just say, the film itself wasn't actually bad and visually it was well shot photographically, there was some nice music in it too.
Where it fell down though was that it missed a great opportunity for her to really open up and tell/show us things. It was just a bit light/empty, but not bad or awful or anything, I want to point that out, it wasn't bad.
Melania was slightly stilted at times too, but I am not sure if that is just her personality or not.

It was set in the 20 days up until the 2025 inauguration and we see the preparations and so on; Incidentally before I go any further, a note to the mods, there was no real politics in it and Donnie was very much a secondary character, along with her Dad and his old family cine camera. It was Melania first.

Anyway, what we saw was her travelling between places, including on the Trump '757, as seen in the opening sequence, played to Michael Jackson's 'Billy Jean', one of her favourites apparently.
This travel footage also includes lots of underground carparks, service tunnels and lifts, it was not all glitz and glamour.

We also saw her doing things, including her work for children (albeit briefly) and other things, such as talking to the wife of an Isreili hostage (now since freed) and her speaking to Brigitte Macron (they are friends).

It was just her going about her day to day business, but it was also sometimes a bit ordinary and mundane, like choosing the decor for the white house or getting her outfit for the big day measured, made/designed and fitted (see the outfit on the film poster and film credits).

She was upset at Jimmy Carter's funeral because it was a year to the day that her Mum had died and we see her lighting candles at a Cathedral elsewhere afterwards. She also was concerned and protective of Barron.

Despite these moments of warmth, most of it seemed a bit cold and distant, almost as if she was skipping round the edges of things. I mentioned her slightly stilted and awkward approach at the beginning? Well...

There were also periods where there was not really any narration, it was just footage of her doing things and talking to people.

This last bit is somewhat unfairly portrayed in the film trailer, because when Donald asks her

"Did you see it?"

And she replies

"No, I'll watch it on the news later"

What was meant was that she had been busy all day and we saw that. It was not a snub at her husband

There is a lot more I could say, such as maybe it would have been far more interesting had it been set in the 20 days after the inauguration, but anyway.

Now, I know there were problems with the production team, but as far as I can tell, Melania wasn't really the problem, it was the producer and issues with the secret service and so on. I may be wrong about that however.

Verdict:

Getting past all the lurid headlines, politics and so on, this was a perfectly watchable film, but sadly where it lacked was any real substance and we never really did get to know more about Melania, despite her touting that claim at the beginning. This meant that in the end, despite it's glossy appearance and music, it was ultimately a bit... Well... Unsatisfying, not bad or awful, just unsatisfying.

Granted, there is only so much you can fit into 20 days, but this film truly could have been a lot more.

An opportunity lost.

Nothing much more to add to that. A weirdly pointless exercise in film making.
