He should've been kept on, although I doubt even he could have saved some of the crappy later scripts that Bronson was given.

He was the closest to Bond by miles.

Dalton was the best actor of all those that played the role, a proper thespian.

A very good actor in fact, but Ill suited to the role of Bond. It didn't suit his style, and he was stilted and unconvincing in the fisticuffs scenes. He just didn't have the necessary physicality. Connery's mere presence could be quietly menacing, the gentleman thug, and Craig could convey that with his manner and movement, but Dalton - a top flight actor for sure - just isn't cut from that cloth.

Lazenby, not really an actor at all, was probably a third in terms of his ability to convey and imply menace, Moore and Brosnan moved well enough to come in a joint fourth, but Dalton just couldn't do that. Thats a criticism of the style of films made across the years, rather than one of Dalton who could otherwise out act the lot of them in his sleep. Dalton couldn't have pulled off a convincing fight scene with Robert Shaw or Dave Bautista, or do the almost comic book violence of the Moore's fights with Jaws. In fact Conmery's fight scene with Shaw was almost a real fight, co-ordinated by a boxing coach rather than a stunt director. Both men were black and blue after several days filming it, which is why it looks so brilliant 60 years on. Dalton was never a sailor, bodybuilder, or tough-nut who would get into fights with gamgs as a teenager. Connery had that ingrained.

“My name is Branson. Charles Bronson’?

He would have been more convincing that Roger Moore in the fight scenes though.

I've never read any of the books but that seems to be the general consensus, I liked both his films purely as pieces of entertainment.

I can watch all the Connery films over and over, apart from Diamonds Are Forever, most of the Moore ones, and OHMSS every time, that's probably one of my favourites.

The Brosnan ones I couldn't get on with, he just wasn't convincing as a tough guy, but didn't have the comedy gold of Moore, although he wasn't helped by some poor stories, a remote control BMW and invisible Aston were definite low points. I went to a show last year with an orchestra and two singers doing the Bond themes hosted by Samantha Bond, towards the end when the male singer asked the audience if there was any they'd missed someone shouted, 'Die Another Day,' to which he replied, 'err, we don't do that one.' 😂

If you want to see Dalton acting his socks off watch 1923. He's the most deliciously hammed up and evil bad guy since John Lithgow did Eric Qualen. A masterclass in evil bad guyness.
