The Coen Brothers version of True Grit.

Seen it before but chose it to download and watch while I was away.

Much closer to the book, which is good straight away. Bridges, Damon and Steinfeld are in some kind of competition to out act one another, and they each put in first rate performances, especially so Steinfeld who was only 13 when filming started.

Bridges blows it away as Rooster Cogburn, unlike John Wayne who preferred to just play John Wayne.

The dialogue and delivery is just delicious, even the supporting cast knocking it out well.

A very well constructed film, all the better for easily outdoing the original which was itself a popular flick of its time.

9/10.
I agree. Far far better version. I really didn't like the John Wayne version but this version is brilliant.

The Coen Brothers don't usually get much wrong. I hadn't realised they were so old!

The remake is without question the better film, but the original will always be one of my favourite movies. John Wayne of course played John Wayne, as he always did, but he never played him with more gusto, and that made him one helluva Rooster Cogburn. Ok, a movie Rooster Cogburn, arguably a borderline pantomime Rooster Cogburn, but boy when he sets off across that valley with his reins in his teeth and a six-shooter in each hand, well, that's the Wild West right there! "Fill your hands you sunnuva bitch!"
