What gig did you go to last night?

I think their sound is that generation though, and they'll both be mid to late 50s so same age as their audience I guess?

I've seen them live a few times locally... but usually i just see Dave shopping in Aldi on a seemingly daily basis.

You're probably right. I only came across them probably at the time of the first lockdown or maybe just before so I tend to think of them as "new". But if course they'd been going for over 10 years by then.

John Otway last night with 'The Big Band', he may be 72 but still as good as ever just with less acrobatics

I saw him on Friday night. I could only name one of his songs before I went in, and had no idea what to expect. Came out with two books, a CD and an enormous grin across my face. One of the best gigs I've ever seen, and he gets bonus points for the theremin!

I'm the opposite, been a fan since 77, own a couple of LP's, 4 or 5 CD's and a couple of DVD's plus Maz bought the book of his Lyrics. Seen him numerous times with 'Wild Willy Barrett', Richard Holgarth (lead guitarist with 'The Big Band') on his own and now with 'The Big Band' although I knew what to expect from watching the DVD of them. Every gig has been different but memorable.

I was an Otway fan pretty much from the start. Bought the Really Free single, (which was a rare event for me as I've only ever bought a handful of records in my life and have never owned a record player) went to tons of his gigs in the 80s and 90s with and without Wild Willy (I also went to quite a few of Willy's solo gigs) and later with Richard. I kind of drifted away in this century but I saw him a couple of months ago and I'm hooked again.

I've seen Otway and Barret once and Otway on his own twice. I thought the two solo Otway gigs were very similar, but enjoyed them all.

By an uncanny co-incidence the first time I saw him was in Aylsbury in a pub function room 40 plus years ago. Seen him a couple of times since.

Try watching a few youtube videos of him with 'The Big Band. Lead Guitar, Rhythm Guitar, Bass and a Drummer................all top notch musicians.

They all take the pi55 out of John in a good natured way and he does it back, rarely will you see a 'rock' band enjoying themselves so much. Richard (iead guitar) joined 'Eddie & The Hotrods (still a member) but when they're not doing anything he plays with Otway with a bunch of his mates from the Essex 'pub rock' scene

I saw Ottway either last year or the year before in a very small and rather dark and dingy venue in Lancaster... had my ticket scanned on the way in by John himself. It was solo gig but his roadie did join him on stage occasionally. There were no more than 15 people in the audience which was a bit of a shame. I think it was his first ever Lancaster gig, and possibly his last. Still a great gig though, especially his Bob Dylan 'cover'.

Oysterband at St Lukes, Glasgow. Part of their long farewell tour (have been going or more than 40 years, I've been a fan for 37 years) and Celtic Connections. St Lukes is a great venue, sound was excellent and there was much singing and baltering done to a great set.

Hard to believe I won't see the band again (estimated that we've seen them more than 15 times since 1988 and only saw the once during the 21 years we were in Stornoway).
