Another welcome return (4th appearance, I think) for The Grahams at Maidenhead's fabulous Norden Farm last night.

Last time we saw them there they were solo, this time with a (great) full band.

First live music we've managed to get to since the wife's emergency appendix episode a couple of months ago, which made us miss Lucinda Williams' tour - last night made up for that.

Just been to see The Saltburn Smugglers at Stillington village hall. North Yorkshire sea shanty’s stuff low key but very enjoyable. We wanted to see them at our local venue but they sold out within hours of the tickets going on sale.

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.
Les Negresses Vertes at the electric ballroom. Fantastic evening.

As my wife put it, they are a tribute act to themselves now. And none the worse for that. They know their audience. You want the old stuff? We'll play the old stuff.

Catching up here on a couple.

Steve White Trio at Thekla Bristol. Supported by Matt Deighton who I missed due to trains, but he joined them for a track, so that pleased me.

Jaylen Ngonda at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival. Great gig and he got a reasonably staid audience all dancing in the early afternoon.

Next up this weekend is the Super Furry Animals ...

Pop Will Eat Itself. Was dubious beforehand and not what I’d put on my playlist, but very good live and enthusiastic (but under capacity) audience.
Supported by Voodoo Radio, who were excellent. Young woman with powerful Poly Styrene/Souixsie -esque vocals, while playing the drums, and dad on the guitar.

Settle Vic Hall does have a very eclectic mix - ethereal Scandinavian Folk last week, shouty rap & punk this.

Jeff Goldblum and band last week in Kingston. He’s a very decent jazz pianist and singer, but his charisma is off the scale. Very entertaining evening and his band and guest singer really elevated the performance. When he came on at the beginning the stage lights highlighted a fly that was darting around in front of the stage - first film I saw him in! Cue lots of Goldblum quips…

Eddi Reader and John Douglas at Acapela near Cardiff.
They were excellent.
Acapela is a very small venue, a converted chapel in a village just outside Cardiff.
It's the third time I've seen Eddi Reader. The first time was at The Tramshed, a mid size venue, a converted tram maintenance depot in the middle of Cardiff. The second time was at Shrewsbury Folk Festival. All very different venues, with different muscle on stage with her, but great every time.

Last night I went to the O2 to see the B52s. I figured this would be my last chance to see them.

Also on the bill were Lene Lovich (arrived too late to see her) the Rezillos who I must admit I don't really remember apart from "Top of the Pops" and Devo, who I enjoyed, but that wasn't why I was there.

Of the three remaining 52s - Fred Schneider and Kate Pierson were on great form but Cindy Wilson seemed like she didn't really want to be there. Anyway they did loads of early stuff from the Ricky Wilson era. A bit like Les Negresses Vertes who I saw recently they're a band that lost their leader early on, carried on for a bit, gave up, then reformed and are now a something of a tribute band to themselves. Anyway it was a lot of fun and I'm glad I can now say I've seen them.

My friends all said the O2 is a horrible venue. They were right.

Big Country at the Music Hall Dundee.
I thought they were great but I‘m biased.
I forgot to say they were supported by the Alarm which now consists of Ewan Peters and one other. Even being Mike Peters son who spent part of his childhood on tour with BC when his dad was lead singer.
They were pretty good and did a good version of 68 guns.

Just over a week ago now, but saw the truly wonderful and joyful Olivia Dean at the O2, on her final Friday there.

Had to go seated due to my 12 year old daughter, but everyone stood up from the very first track anyway, so we were stood for the entirety, just not down on the floor.

No encore, but a good solid 1hr 45 I think it was, of non stop music and banter - she's very good at engaging with the audience.

Would have much rather seen her at a smaller venue, but as she is so popular now, even if she did announce a smaller gig, the chances of getting tickets are super slim - I did well to get these.
Would see her again in a heartbeat - her band and backing singers are excellent too.
*I believe her band is the same musicians who she originally busked with back in the day.
