Was discussing this with friends & family recently. Us cool kids didn't rate them - seemed to be enjoying themselves too much, and were from London. My 20-something offspring picked up on them, which allowed me to point them in the direction of the 'proper' bands of the era - The Specials, Selecta, Beat, etc.
Yes, I think they always were a bit of an accessible 'gateway' into 2 Tone and Ska and then get left behind. Then you forget what a amazing singles band they are/were.
My daughter said she'd have liked to have gone and I said I didn't think they'd register with her. She quoted Baggy Trousers, It must be love, Our House and House of Fun as iconic singles ... she's right of course.
