That's the first time I've ever been called that. Maybe I should start a club with Linford.
If that particular cap fits, and suits, you, Mort, well...... as I have no problem with Linford, or his opinions, albeit they are sometimes different to mine, that would be your call.

I wonder why are cars such a special case? Other items get damaged and no one carps on about their resale value; it's just seen as wear and tear as long as the item still works. Maybe that's just in my world - if so, I know where I'd rather live.

I know I got pretty fed up with my nice bike getting scratched in the racks at work through the carelessness of others, and in the end, I had to get it repainted to stop it going rusty. I don't see that as normal wear and tear...

My nice "asset" bike(s) doesn't go near communal bike storage. My less nice "utility"/"clunker" bike(s) does; because dinks are part of life and if you don't want your nice stuff spoiled you don't leave it lying around in public places.
Authority?

He had a car that was worth X.

It is now worth X minus the cost of repairing it, plus the bother of sorting it out and the time it will take to do it.

It isn't his free choice and to argue otherwise is daft.
What would happen to him if he didn't repair? He would have to accept the asset is worth less.

His free choice.

I bought a cheap hack for commuting after I had my nice bike repainted. So I had to spend money on a new bike and a respray in order to compensate for the carelessness of others.

Typical of the pragmatic choices we have to make I'm afraid. I simply made the choice on acquiring the nice bike(s) that they weren't going to be risked, and got the hack(s) in parallel. I'd say you're an optimist and I'm a realist.

Would that the world wasn't as it is but...

Nothing to do with optimism: I used my nice bike for commuting because my only other bike was an mtb. The only reason I bought a cheaper bike was because of other people - who have made me worse off.

Car park in da 'sham is tiny and really really tight. Notoriously so. TLH smeared her SAAB 93 down a column the first day she owned it. Which was funny given it was exactly the same size as the 900 she was driving for months before!
Well if you give the chauffeur the day off what do you expect.

And anyway, the cobwebs might get brushed off. That would never do.
