What Have You Fettled Today?

Put up some bike hangers last week so the shed is finally getting a bit more organised

I took 2cm off each end of the Genesis ebike's handlebars. They were 70cm wide, which is big on a size Small bike, imo.

I also replaced the comfy Brooks B17 with the C17 that has sat unused for about four years. If I don't get on with it, it will soon be for sale here at a bargain price.

Gradually making this bike my own.

(Meticulously) Prepping for a new Chain lube that’s neither Oil or Wax based. So both of those invaders must be wiped [And brushed, scrubbed, shaken or scared…….😉] from existence……

Whilst I await the arrival of an old Campagnolo crank-bolt spanner needed to complete the stripping-down of the Holdsworth it seemed like as good a time as any to begin the task of cleaning & lubricating the bits'n'bobs already off. This was today's pile;

I was quite surprised by how much filth had accumulated on both the front and rear mech's! Still a fair bit of work to do but hopefully all the 'accessories' will be finished by stumps-up tomorrow.

The 'Peanut-Butter' spanner should arrive either tomorrow or Thursday after which I can CLA the B/Bracket which will be the last mechanical job before the bike can be put back together. Before the re-assembly starts, however, the frame will receive its new transfers which, on the recommendation of member (thanks raleighnut!), were sourced through H. Lloyd (and jolly good they are too).

Fettling / messing (Meddling ?) in the Sun.

I drove to work today and took in drinks, packed lunches etc. Ready for 3 days of cycle commuting. Just readying the bike now too…..😉

Swapped chains on two bikes. Old chains now been through the ultrasonic cleaner. All ready to go back on.

Click from the drive chain came back this evening. I had, by 'choice', ordered some flare nut wrenches (slightly open one end, but encloses a nut better than standard spanner). The right XT pedal's locknut had rounded using a standard spanner as it only grabs two sides - this happened a few years ago as it's made of soft alloy and had 'welded' itself on. Can't get a socket on it as the pedal has a flange that flares out where it screws into the crank. Tried a special adjustable spanner a couple of years ago, nothing. Came across flare nut spanners - they wrap more round the nut. Tried the 17mm and it wasn't grabbing at all, so popped a 16mm on the lock nut and tapped it down using a large socket. Snug fit and locknut just came undone. Noticed quite a bit of play in the pedal once it was off the crank, so adjusted the two lock nuts on the axel, squirted in a load of fresh grease, and popped the axel back in the pedal body. All the old grease just get's 'evacuated'.

Made sure I didn't do up the locknut too tight. Lets see if the click has gone tomorrow. It won't need re-greasing for a few years.

The March of Progress continues.
Frame/forks duly sanded again, and re-sprayed with undercoat. I’m leaving the various dings as ‘patina’, innit. Unless anyone wants what looks like a pair of 27” wheels with tubs fitted, they will be going back on the bike after a clean & service.

Once more unto the Breach!
Couple of top coats added to the frame/forks, and the last of the tin used to catch the ‘sparse’ coverage.
Wheels duly cleaned, and rims/hubs given the once-over with some fine wire wool to take the stubborn crap off.
Next job to clean up the furniture while the paint cures.

No clicks this morning - we shall see. Might keep an eye on ebay for a scrapped M540 or XT RH pedal and butcher it for a replacement 'lock bolt' as it's officially called.

Removed the front Nitto rack off the Faran as it only really gets used for camping or when we go tip the tip and put the front dynamo light on the fork crown; only bad thing is the dynamo cables are a bit messy as they have to be long to reach the light on the rack so have tied them in for now until I work out the best way to fit some connectors to make the switch easier.

Noticed the rear tyre was down again on the bh's Cotic (have just been pumping it up and it's been holding for a few days), so had a closer look and noticed it was perished in a couple of places so decided to swap it for one of the same off another wheelset.

Old one off ok but the rim tape was damaged so had to remove that ,too a while to get it all off but after a wipe with brake cleaner got the new tape on and valve fitted; tyre popped on fine but then realised I'd put the tyre on the wrong way round ,so off and on again and sealant added once it was seated.
