As long as I breathe, I attack.
Finished the cx build today , needed a new cassette as the old one was too far gone to mesh with the new chain and added bar tape .
Need to get some colour coordinating frame stickers as you can see i only had yellow
Might need to fiddle with the saddle to get the fit dialled in but its pretty much done

I had a couple of hours on Friday afternoon, so I thought I'd change the headset on my old Marin. It was a very basic one I fitted in 2019, and it was creaking following a ride in heavy rain before Xmas.

A 4pm start and I already have the decent quality replacement. Just need to remove wheel, remove stem, undo nuts, pop off bearing seats and replace. Should be done by 6pm.

Then every part of the job became difficult. The stem was stuck, the bearing seats didn't want to come off, my homemade press was nowhere to be found. I stopped at 8pm rather jaded.

Started again at 11 today. Finally got the new top and bottom cups in place, but nothing would persuade the new race to go on the top of the fork. I gave up after another four hours of low productivity.

Tomorrow I will have another look and think. Maybe see if I can construct a better DIY tool to pop it on. Grrrr.

Is it me? Have I just forgotten how infuriating simple jobs can be?

Found in the Yorkshire hills ...
This lunch-time had me with a couple of hours spare due to some domestic stuff keeping me out of the study.

Further work on the Giant FCR I picked up on Tuesday resulted in the gears all now functioning correctly, as they were gummed up from lack of use. It's also got a new pair of grips and I've swapped the flat pedals for SPD's. Finally, the tar-like substance has been cleaned off the shifter and wheel.

New padding for my helmet ⛑️

Like the subliminal Wagon Wheel wrapper pictured too. Thought provoking 🤣

I'm waiting on an Alivio 2 x 9 side pull front derailleur to complete this build 🤞Today I chopped away the outer chainring on a old triple crankset and fitted an 8 speed Shimano 11- 40t cassette, which gives a low gear of around 15 gear inches. Hopefully this bike will displace the 26er. It's a mk1 Cotic Solaris frame.

Last weekend I was driven to distraction by a headset and swore by almighty Sheldon Brown never to pick up an Allen key again.

Predictably that vow didn't last and I was out in the garage again today converting my Spa from drops to flat bars.

Apart from stabbing myself with a bradawl it seemed to go well. Spa sensibly route cables externally and Sora is pretty straightforward, so that helped.

I'll take it for a test ride when the rain stops and decide if its an improvement.

Yesterday, two wheels trued that were slightly out (Sunshine Professional on MLD & T610 Deore on A319). The lazy way: in situ with brake blocks as a guide.

Also replaced a 44 T middle chainring of a triple road chainset with a 39T, reset the front derailleur & indexing.

Refitted Panaracer (Jack Brown Green) tyres to the single speed, as the early 80s 531 didn't have comfortable clearance for 33mm at the chainstays.

Two good days fettling, after a 21T freewheel & 110mm BB today for the single speed - plan was a lower gear* & better chainline (photos above).

* 47/21 on 700C/ 33mm = approx 60.5"
