What Have You Fettled Today?

I don't know if it counts as fettling but with all the talk of 11sp chains needing changed at 0.5% I ordered a new chain checker. It came tonight:

At just over 4,000miles, the chain is still good 👍

Today, I 'as been mainly doing wheels.
Replaced broken quick-release axle on a MTB rear; a spoke and tyre on one hybrid rear, and ten spokes on another hybrid rear - equalling the shop record!

As it's been mostly dry round here for the past couple of months, I've not had to do anything at all for a long while.
Therefore today has been chains & frames cleaning day on all eight bikes.
Nothing else needing to be done at all.

Dismantled the Surly Preamble completely to prepare frame and fork to sell it.

Changed the seat clamp on the commuter.

new chain on the commuter as i replaced the chain ring the old chain although newish had worn into the old chain ring that it wasn’t sitting right or shifting , i am goign to adjust the brakes after a cuppa too as they need a furtle .
TBH the bike is pretty tired but i need to keep it going .

And with a bit of tlc it probably will :-) The ‘hack’ I ride into town is from the 70’s, the tourer from the 80’s and the shop ‘courtesy bike’ from the 90’s.

The wheels are toast, I need to regrease the bearings every month and found rings in the rim from potholes but it's hard to see them all when communicating at night

It took me decades to find out that working on bikes can be as enjoyable as turning pedals - even as a hopeless amateur at both.

With good music, no time pressure and a coffee, I reckoned it would be time to replace the 8-speed chain & cassette today, as 2 years had passed since the last KMC X8 & Microshift (12- 32). Surprised to find the chain is still within 0.5 -0.75 mm on the Pedros checker.

Next, the bike & drivechain were thoroughly cleaned, polished & waxed.

A lowly Shimano dynamo hub* had the cup/ cone bearings regreased & adjusted. It's a bit delicate on the drive side - there's a risk of breaking the copper wire. Also, the magnet/ cogging effect affects how you judge the bearing preload setting.

Finally, M+ tyres were picked clear from all debris/ glass shards, etc, reseated & set back to 3 bar.

A good day.

Re-greased the 7-speed hybrid wheelset which arrived on Wednesday. It's decent enough, if a bit heavy, and appears to have had limited mileage. Or lots of mileage somewhere where you don't need to use the brakes.

I also adjusted the Giant FCR flat bar road bike as the bars weren't straight and a couple of other minor jobs were needed, mainly on the brakes. That was evident this afternoon when nearly colliding with a taxi that drove across the new bike lane on Whitehall Road in Leeds without looking, or slowing.

I’d bought a new chainset for the Thorn rohloff. It was going very cheap and I fitted it at Christmas. Since then I’ve not managed to track down an irritating creak by changing bottom brackets, checking pedals, eccentric BB etc. I finally realised it had to be the chainset and cranks not seating properly. So, I splashed out on the stronglight version I should have bought in the first place and the creak is no more!

I’m kind of housebound today - keeping an eye on a post-op Wife. So thought I could at least while away some time checking all bolts, give the ride a visual once over before tomorrow. Maybe even a squirt or two of lube. All ably assisted by my furry sidekick. She’s the smart one parked in the Sun btw…….

The Temple had its first short ride of the year yesterday and I immediately sensed something was not right.

There was a clunking sound when I lifted the front wheel an inch off the ground and dropped it. I guessed that the grease in the wheel bearings had dried and revealed some play.

This morning I checked it over and discovered the nutted axle was loose. How did that happen?

Tightening it took less time than typing this.
