A few makers in the 70's and 80's used that fake lugwork, usually on low and medium range bicycles. Motobecanes have never taken my fancy, but I have ridden them now and again, and they are a good, sturdy bicycle, just not much to write home about.

You know, if it is 27 lbs or so as is, it would possibly make a fun single speed or fixed gear. I have an 84 Centurion Accordo with chromo main tubes and hi-ten forks and chainstays which has made a great winter beater. Those old bikes had long wheelbases and can usually run 35 mm tires making for a pretty comfortable ride. It doesn't sound like you are going to get the big bucks and if you don't , it could still be fun.
