Others have tried too, but I still cannot understand get my head around it. Maybe I just do not have the hatred gene inside me that others have, I wish most people well regardless of where they happened to be born, after all we have little choice in the matter.

How many potential world class cyclists are there on the planet who are not white and not American who will never get the chance to lose at the Olympics because their medal winning potential will go undeveloped, even undiscovered, because of the accident of their birth into an under-privileged community? How many in just the favelas of Brazil?

I'm white, middle-aged, middle-class (sort of), affluent, and well-educated (sort of). I'm very, very lucky. Privileged. Part of the most privileged % of the global population. You might not begrudge that, and fortunately I think I'm not wallowing in entitlement, but there are plenty of folk out there who well might.

And your 'hard work wins it' doesn't really stack up. Genetics and lucky breaks and access to money/relative wealth and the availability of leisure time play a greater part. Hard work matters, but not as much as you might think.

We live on the same islands and suffer (pretty much) the same weather and geography.... and where is most of the good arable farmland?

Second, it doesn't take much searching to discover that Mara Abbott was educated at Whitman College. That gives us a pretty good idea.

Third, it's not about her personally anyway, it's about the jersey she's wearing and what that represents.

Yes, the comment that has got you so worked up was trite and undignified, but it really isn't worth the hand-wringing. And I am 100% certain that Mara Abbott isn't losing as much sleep over it as you are.
