ETA: most people probably wouldn't notice - but modern Marathon family tyres would make a big difference too. I (almost) can't remember the last time I mended a puncture.

Yep, I think derailleurs were banned in the TdF until 1937 ish.

+1 for Marathon tyres - I've not had a single puncture since I started using them. Over 8 years puncture free to date.
