I was thinking more along the lines of my seizing of any opportunity to escape my own reality for a bit by ranting into the ether

I'm not scoffing, I'm just saying how I feel. I suspect I might go down electric bike in future as an assist on hills if the time comes I struggle.
Hopefully be a long time yet.

Surely if you couldn't walk then it's likely to be more of a mobility scooter than bike but anyway.

Cycling is a huge beneficial part of my life as regards to my mental and physical wellbeing. What type of cyclist am I?.........An extremely wary and cautious one nowadays!

I ride a trike 20 to 35 miles every other day. I ride totally for recreation and exercise. I pretty much do NOT obey any of the "real cyclist" rules at all. My trike gives me comfort, view, and ease of use.

I'm a vertically challenged not particularly fast not particularly pleasing on the eye commuter kind of cyclist. Learnt to ride at 5 thanks to my grandad bless him and always had a bike since. Had a few years not cycling due to work and car sharing laziness on my behalf but thankfully back on the saddle since that. 5 days a week commute riding with the odd leisure ride but nothing extreme. I ride in with one of the shift lads at work when he's on days which is a good laugh plenty of close calls trying to keep up with his full susser downhill!

Im a 'retired' former fanatical cyclist, could ride an average of 18+ mph lone riding 50 mile circuits, (which isnt THAT great but not shabby either) commuting, leisure, fitness, 6000 miles pa.
Tuberculosis, pneumonia and complications took me off the bike for two years, tried to get back to fitness in 2015 but then osteoarthritis took hold..im a mere pleasure rider now, dont do many miles anymore.
Long since accepted that was then, this is now..doesn't bother me.

Nah, you're not lazy, you're "Pragmatic".

That said, if I walked up all the hills here I may as well leave the bike at home and go hiking...

What you see with many cyclists is that they go easy on the flats then hammer the hills. The latter especially if they see another cyclist already going up the hill. Almost as if it an affront to go slower uphill, or even to be caught uphill or not to catch uphill. The idea of changing down the gears and keeping the effort similar to flat is alien to them.

I do that, for the simple reason that it's possible. I'd go easy on the flat and uphill if only the hills would let me. Sadly the danger of grinding to a halt or rolling backwards prevents this and demands undignified amounts of effort.

To be fair, the simple physics of air resistance yada yada mean that your effort expenditure for a given average pace will be lower, if you ride a little harder uphill than on the flats.

I don't think I've met a rider who never goes slower uphill, at least on proper hills :P Even the pros slow down a bit!

I'm the sort who sees a hill and cycles down it, even if it's taking me the wrong way
