I've bought everyone's present except for my Dad. What should I buy a typical grumpy old man 65 year old, when he already has everything he needs and says he doesnt want anything special?
Budget about £30 - £40!

If he is anything like my Dad then I wouldn't bother. ;)
While clearing out the box room of all his junk, so I could turn it into a guest room, I found presents that have been unwrapped but never opened.

I am as stumped as you are as to what to get Dad this year.

Yearly membership for the National Trust, we renew it every year ..... it's the gift that keeps on giving.

A years subscription to a specialist interest magazine (...paging Mr Fnaar) can also be good.

Vodka, tomato juice and tabasco, every year. He won't shut up until he has his first bloody mary of the day.

Usually whiskey and cheese (though I think my siblings give whiskey too).

I always think at least with foody items that you know they like that you haven't given them something they don't want or need.

My Dad wants a copy of Ronald Searle's Forty Drawings - it's very pricey and very harrowing so I might get him some Grado headphones instead.

My Dads just bought and original Volvo C70 convertible as a summer toy, so I bought him a big die cast model of one for his desk and a DVD of Saint (the Val Kilmer version).

Nothing. My family agreed about ten years ago to not buy presents for each other. We just have a nice time with one another without the stress and nonsense of buying gifts that no one need or wants.

I'm a Dad aged 56 who's got almost everything he needs and my son has asked me the very same question so I've announced that henceforth when people are stuck for ideas I'd like to build up a collection of malt whiskies. My first was a distiller's edition Lagavulin (nice and peaty but a little sweet and vanilla-ey) and the next will be an Ardbeg.

Precisely this was always my dad's birthday present from me until my SiL latched on to the idea and gave the same so now I have the double dilemma of what to get for dad's birthday in late November and just four weeks later what to get for Christmas.

This year for his birthday I decided to get him nothing. He seemed pleased with that ("one less thing for you to throw away when I am gone").

For Christmas I'll get a side of beef that he and I can tuck into while everyone else "enjoys" their turkey
