if you consider that above a certain height, you fall at the same speed whatever the height (hence why sometimes parachutists survive when they have a fail) i would imagine that what people say about getting over 50mph being very hard is probably true, and yes, it would be more to do with aerodynamics. so it's unlikely you reached that speed.

What speed to the TdF riders get coming off the mountains?

About the same....50-60mph....some 70's. But their hills are bigger.

Chunal into Glossop is a good 50 mph easy with no side winds.....you have to watch for them though..........

Well, write it down boy ......
48 mph down the hills towards Wincle on the first wheel which I had built myself. It was on the front and I sure I saw a wobble getting bigger and bigger as I got faster. If I hadn't bottled out I may have hit 50.

New top speed today. Did 48 down a short hill pedaling like mad. then got 51.6mph on flixton hill for those who know it.

Yeah, sure you can go over 50mph in the UK, I'm confident of that. I've reached 45mph several times (down the Horseshoe pass near Llangollen for instance). But once you get over 50mph, it's less about your power and more about aerodynamics (as you said).
I think we probably all agree that 78.9mph is down to an error.

With the Horseshoe (known locally as "the shoe") it depends where you let it go. The steepest bits are a bit wiggly and the safest stretch (between the cattle grind and the very sharp bend) is the least steep. The aerodynamics make a huge difference and a couple of friends of mine on a tandem found that they were over 15 mph faster than they'd ever been on their road bikes.

39.8 is my max.

I'm a safety first person, though breaking 40 on a rigid mtb would have been nice.

53mph off Nick of Pendle towards Clitheroe, slowing down for that cattlegrid on the bend ...
51 off the Moorcock down into Denshaw
High 40s routinely down hills in Lancs, Saddleworth and South Pennines, but getting over 50 seems a lot harder, aero or not. It all makes the climbing worthwhile!

Hit 62.6mph in the Alps 2 weeks ago, could have gone faster but I was already passed ride leader & heading for a junction. Those who didn't back off missed the junction & had to stop, turn round, climb up the hill & then catch up again so I'm rather glad I slowed down.
