But they are open-ear bone conduction type so he should still be able to hear the traffic...

Plus you can hear traffic with normal earphones and besides you should be looking regardless.

Haven't bought any this year. I don't think I bought any last year either.

Best gadget in general is my iPod shuffle loaded up with 'Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires' or similar (it's just survived yet another washing machine cycle)

Make sure you get red ones, orange ones aren’t quite as good, and blue ones are rubbish.
