Dont worry he let me know that via pm ...I admit I was thrown by the post above mine mentioning shop prices, thought they guy had been fleeced on repairs . However the threads titled biggest repair bill, not biggest bike build bill. He replaced the lot, so in the spirit of the thread his replacement of nearly every part hardly constitutes a repair.
I didn't think it appropriate to hijack the thread with a personal spat hence the pm.
If I made an error of judgement regards the content of the thread then I made a mistake.
I read it and thought it was relevant, perhaps it wasn't but I certainly wasn't trying to outdo anybody, just thought it was interesting as I am interested to read other people's comments.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
£10 for LBS to straighten mech hanger (I'll do it myself next time) :okay:

Not a lot. I tend to give the LBS stuff I can't or won't do, so headsets and BB's. I've spent enough time doing them to know it's my achilles heel. So 30 or 40 quid. As for other stuff, it's as needed and I do it.

I love tinkering with mechanical things, so would never take my bike to the shop for a repair. I've not really spent very much on tools, etc. If some sort of expensive specialised tool is recommended, I usually manage to find a (time-consuming:-) work-around.

I used to pay 150-200 every year to just replace stuff. I used to do it myself but then started giving it to the bike shop.

Now I bought a cassette, chain, brake pads and cable set for £60. I already have bar tape at home so will give my bike a refresh. I always enjoyed doing bike stuff on my own so I wanna get back into it.

Youve been seen off then....The chances of you needing a new front and rear mech, brake calipers and levers as well as consumables ie chainset / chain , cassette, brake blocks cables etc is negligible/ incomprehensible..some of those are life long items.

I really hope your LBS didnt talk you into getting the whole lot done...thats why I keep clear of them and bought a bike stand and largely DIY....when I noticed local bike shops charging more than local garages I very quickly learnt to get my hands dirty.

Lexus dealerships charge less for major services^_^
Yeah its crazy how much bike services compare with car service prices.
