High Noon!

It is a fantastic film - really unlike any other western before or since. It is shot in real time (film starts at about 11 am and finishes just after noon). The tension builds fantastically up to the inevitable noon deadline. The tension makes the film rather than the shoot out.

Clint probably gets the vote for his westerns as they were a good ten years later than most westerns (I think he was making them when westerns were rather out of fashion) so the later production wins through well. So many funny lines in them too.

Best funny western was the one with Goldie Horne marrying a mormon.

"That's mighty bold talk for a one eyed fat man."
"Fill your hand you sonovabitch!"

They don't do dialogue like that any more.

Lots of great ones, The "Dollars" films, Unforgiven, Dances With Wolves, Deadwood.
I think the best one I've seen in a long time is less a western than a "far, far eastern". It's set in the Australian outback and called The Proposition.

For me it's too close to call between:

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Dances with Wolves
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Tombstone

Andy in Sig

Vice President in Exile
My favourite western is the one wear John Wayne has a monologue to the effect of, "Twenty years ago I would have hit you but I'm not going to hit you now ... the hell I'm not!" and then he belts the bloke. Then there is an almighty mass scrap on a mudslide. I think the film is called McClintock.

There was another good comedy western where Robert Mitchum (if memory serves) plays a drunken sheriff who has to sober up to resolve a crisis.
