Some are better than others. I have 26 year old Dura Ace that still run on original bearings and races.

Cheaper hubs, if not regularly greased up will fail. At least with cartridge hubs you can swap out the worn bearings.

Is anyone else's piss boiling about throwing away good wheels because the bearing cups are worn out ?

I don't buy cup and cone wheels now but I do have one back wheel on the winter bike (giant) that the cups were knackered after about 1000 miles, I still run the wheel but with the cones loose, I have did this on a few wheels over the years, just made sure the brake pads were slightly wider apart.

Try Acycles_shop on Eblag. It's a French site that seems to specialise in old French equipment.

I used to be an engineer, and I'm wondering if there would be a market for replacing bearing cups in hubs ?

It is basic engineering practice.

The only variable is the OD of the cup which could be a standard blank made from solid and ground to fit the hub pocket as needed. Reaming the pocket and pressing the new cups in could be done on the complete wheel no need to strip the hub out.

If the hub allows it converting to a cartridge bearing would be possible too.
