when bearings fail

I have never waited until they fail - 50 grade 10 bearings cost £5.

You can get a little grab with fresh grease, say once every 5 to 10 revolutions. If it is more often then the bearings are worn.

I had my rear cup and cones fail a few weeks ago. Not overly dramatic in my case. Started rumbling a bit, then turned into a horrible crunching sound after a few miles. Made it another 5 miles home. When I took it appart one of the bearings had sheared in half and the resulting debris had started to wear down the race. If I'd wanted to salvage the wheel I could have stopped sooner but I had been planning to replace it anyway as the rim was thinning so I kept going.

I had a rear hub bearing failure. Starts rumbling.

Replaced cones and balls with a pack from a LBS. Started rumbling straight away.

The balls were 'out of round'. = cheap shoot.

Replaced with 'proper' BBs from a 'proper' BB supplier, to a 'proper' specification.

^^^ that is nothing.

I once had a BB go all floppy on me, when I took it apart, there were no bearing at all on one side, just a grey paste!!!

no idea what happenbed, suspect cheap bearing got ground to a pulp. most strange.

can't happen now with these new fangled cartridge BB.
