When did you give someone a Backie?

This morning. And I’ll do it again this afternoon. For 16km and with a 9% grade hill thrown in for good measure. I’m in my mid forties. I know how to hang onto my youth. (And she knows how to hang onto the back of my bike)

Must be 55 years ago....in my teens.
By coincidence I saw a group of teenage lads a couple of days ago. They were all on bikes and the one in front was giving someone a lift on the handlebars.
I knew then that I was getting old as my first thought was "that doesnt look safe".

I got a backie from someone who worked for my old man when I was four or five. I caught my left foot in the spokes of the back wheel as we rode round the garage forecourt. To this day my left foot is slightly turned in and I wear down the left heel on my shoe at twice the rate of the right.
