theirs?????????????

I've found over the years that the shirt is in the same bracket as shoes and suits in that you get what you pay for.

I've lost count of the amount of shirts I've bought over the years that look crap after a few months from certain places.

The only ones that seem to last for me are Thomas Pinks.

Stephens Brothers make a good shirt, Daniel Hechter used to until they started using that awful modern collar design with the huge spread. And I'm not sure why anyone needs to button down a collar - are they afraid of the wind catching hold of it?

I had a few Thomas Pink shirts but found the collar went a bit weird and took some serious ironing every time.

Just get the work shirts from sainsbury's now @ £8 a pop I don't get irritated when the kids mess on them or when I do mid morning bike tinkering and get chain oil on them.

Yeah I've noticed that with a few that are a bit older as well.

TK Maxx by the way or charity shops - you can often get an old but really well tailored shirt for a couple of quid.

This always used to be the case, picked up some Hugo Boss shirts and a couple of DKNY signature shirts for less than a tenner in the past but these days they are seemingly only a few pounds cheaper than from other shops. aaahhh the glory days!

Bought an Ede and Ravenscroft shirt from a chariddy shop in Woodstock recently for £4 IIRC - that would have been a +£75 in their posh establishment I'll wager young Wigsie m'lad.

Debenhams when the sale is on. Or TK Maxx.

It's work, for heaven's sake. You shouldn't be wasting money on work clothes.

Well, work is where we spend most of our waking time during the week. And I like to look good when I can... I've taken to buying replica 1920s shirts with spearpoint collars - I can't stand those massive modern city wideboy-style collars that almost all modern shirts have. And they go well with both the vintage tweed and my Paul Smith cord suits...

If you can afford it, fair enough. I'd rather take the family to Devon for the weekend.

That would be inordinately expensive from here!

And actually, buying decent clothes is not expensive. You just have to think of fit in terms of how long they last. Hand-made shoes which you can resole. Properly-made shirts. A made-to-measure suit in the right fabric - or indeed a tough vintage tweed. These things last. So I buy one decent pair of shoes every 10 years, not a pair that will last for one. I recently finally threw away a shirt that I had had since I was 14 (that's... well, a long time).

+1 although its a state of mind IMO rather than financial situation, I have 4 or 5 really nice shirts but would never wear them for work, they are for 'best'.

Won't spend more than £12 on a work shirt or £100 on a work suit. with the exception of my shoes and jacket its all cheap!

I always used to spend a lot on my work shirts, i tend to get through them rapidly though, but found that Primark were doing excellent Egyptian cotton work shirts with French double cuffs and a cut away collar for £7. The only problem is it gets horrendously busy in the Manchester Primark so you have to go mega early or just before they shut or you get caught in scrum of fashonistas buying the latest disposable budget fashion items.

Went in to the Thomas Pink shop in the Mailbox once, never again. Too easy to get suckered in to the hype and cleverly designed surroundings. Once you've parted with eighty quid and walked out into the daylight you've got an ok shirt and a posh bag, waste of money.

Normally Asda or Tesco, sometimes Debenhams if I'm in there during the sales. Used to buy expensive suits, shirts etc for work - no point though if you're not customer facing and sit in ana office looking at the same people every day.
