I remember when the dials had letters. The old family number was TID8618*, TID being the first three letters of the local exchange, Tideway.

*Actually, that was my old number at the same exchange. Substituted so as not to bother my old mum.

I still remember our old number IMPerial331 which was (and still is) in Chislehurst, Kent (but with within the M25 and the London Borough of Bromley)
They then went to four figure numbers at some point in the late 1960's
We took the number with us when we moved across town in 1970, and then my parents moved out of the area, the number stayed with the property, and to this day has been used by the buyer of the property as the number for his architectural practice

My mum says she has never lived in London. Born in Whipps Cross and brought up in Barkingside then lived in Hornchurch.
We moved to Billericay on 2/4/65 The day the GLC spread from the River Lea to Havering....the same bl00dy day !!!
