Where does the law stand on barbed wire

Our halls of residence at Luton Uni had broken glass cemented in to the top of the perimeter walls. Another halls of residence had those very sharp galvanised fences that are angled out so you can't climb them without losing a leg of slicing an ear off. I am not sure of the law, but this was a University so it would really surprise me if what they were using was illegal. The law might differ for personal habitations though?

I would concentrate on ensuring that everything valuable is not accessible, and everything accessible is not valuable. Even with barbed wire, they can sling coats or old carpets over it and still climb over if they want. But if everything is secure and out of sight they will likely choose an easier house to break into.

These are all really good points. After reading all these comments I'm starting to doubt it myself know.
My next door neighbours have guinea pigs which appear to be free to roam the not very secure garden. Either the guinea pigs come home each night or they replace them on a regular basis. Another option is their cats round them up inna sheep dog stylee.

I've still got the scar from climbing a glass topped wall when I was a lad and have always refused customers requests to stick glass or wire on the many garden walls I've built over the years, a useful hint if you have the room is to dig over a strip of soil on your side of the wall and soak it until it's marshy when they jump the wall at night and sink up to their knees it tends to put them off any bad intentions.

An alternative vicious shrub would be berberis. Several varieties are available, although some are not as dense as pyrocantha.
Had a hedge of it in our front garden up to last month.

Only problem with Berberis, is the Berberis sawfly which has been devastating Berberis shrubs all over the country and can strip them of all their leaves in very little time. There's not much effective treatment to stop them and its potluck as to whether your shrubs will be hit, last year was particularly bad, most gardens that I worked on with them succumbed, this year was a bit better.

Top banana, a moat surrounding the country estate.

Hi.
I know it's a little of a strange title but all will make sense in a minute.
I've just got back from a bike ride only to be told by the neighbour that his guinea pig has been stolen. As you can imagine his kids are not to happy as they are a family pet to them..After having a look around my back garden there evidence that thieves have managed to climb my 10 foot high stone retaining wall to gain access to my garden and then crossed over to the neighbours. Only Just last week I was a little suspicious that someone had tried to get into my garden as a few things looked like they had been disturbed but I just put it down to it being a windy night. Obviously its not nice knowing that you may have someone snooping around your property and was now thinking of placing some barbed wire on top of my 10ft wall to discourage them. I'm not talking about the big curly wire that you see in war films , but just a couple of lengths running across the top.
The big question is though , would I be breaking the law doing this. With the compensation culture of our society, could I be held liable if someone injured themselves on it. Usually the only thing that happens around here, is the odd gate swapping on a Saturday night by some half cut youngsters on the way home from the pub but lately there seems to be an increase in pretty crime ..
Don't know why a thief would steal a guinea pig, you'd be lucky to get a fiver for it down the pub! I only paid about £10 for each of mine from the pet shop.

I hate to admit it,.but the cat seems to of put on a little weight. Are you thinking what I'm thinking???
On a serious note though I,m really starting to think there was really no wrong doing here. The neighbour actually breeds these little animals and I find it hard to believe that someone would scale a 10ft wall just to steal one. It's just not something a thief would do for something of little value. The guinea pig in question was only a few weeks old and I think it may of been eaten by the others ,or his children may of left the latch off the cage. Either way though I,ve left some photos of the ex wife around the garden to scare off any undesirable characters that may trespass. I,ve put some warning signs on the outside wall just to cover myself legally ,( I wouldn't want to give them a heart attack)
