If it was me I'd go for a mixed hedge with pyrocantha, blackthorn, whitethorn or mahonia (which has benefit of flowering in winter which makes a nice change).

Dogrose would be another option

A thick bush with brutal spikes spines and thorns is much more effective than barbed wire and there's no legal minefield to deal with.

Is the top of your wall flattish? You could slather on a layer of anti climb paint.

No its not got a flat top to it. It's like your typical welsh stoned wall you see dotted around in the wilds of Wales, but only taller

Could you not just put a bit of fencing at a 45' angle outwards? Probably marginally more sightly than barbed wire.

However, I get the feeling that unless you are going to go for MoD style razor wire around all four walls, someone who wants to get into your garden will do so. After all, thick gloves or a blanket is all you need to get passed barbed wire.

After reading that it's seems the law is a total mine field, and it would not be in my best interest to use it.

I think they got some "mine field" bulbs on special offer at B&Ms. I,ll just have to make sure I keep the cat out of garden. I wouldn't him digging a hole over one to do his business :=))

I know it was mentioned upthread but I really am struggling to understand why anyone would steal a guinea pig. Was it an attack-pig that they had to subdue with peanuts soaked in alcohol or suchlike?

Correctly trained, guinea attack pigs are vicious

What makes them think they were broken into and what makes them think the guinea pig was taken rather than say, set free or shoved into the garbage disposal unit?

Guinea pig theft aside, ours often escaped and came home, which I’d love to hear more of this caught my eye in the earlier link.

“Section 164 of the Highways Act 1980 says that barbed wire on land adjoining a public highway must not cause a nuisance to humans or animals using the highway. Anything placed below 2.4 metres high will usually be deemed to be causing a nuisance and the local authority can issue a notice demanding its removal”

There must be tens of thousands of miles of barbed wire fences along our minor highways and byways, all of it under 2.4 metres. What exactly does this mean?

If I duck through a barbed wire fence which doesn’t carry a warning sign is the landowner liable?

EDIT: a hint for your neighbour, leave the cage door open and accessible. Escaped guinea pigs usually return around dusk - at least our three did. I’m very fond of guinea pigs but my wife says no.

An alternative vicious shrub would be berberis. Several varieties are available, although some are not as dense as pyrocantha.
Had a hedge of it in our front garden up to last month.

A quick google shows you can buy a guinea pig for about £15 so why on earth go to all the risk of climbing a neighbour's wall etc etc. Even a fancy "show" pig is only about £40

My money's on the cage door inadvertently being left open, unless other stuff was taken of course
