Wow, impressed with your knowledge of London taverns !

I am thinking of doing teh LCC Summer Ride (from Jubilee Gardens to Greenwich) at the end of the month, details here LCC Summer Ride

Where would you recommend stopping off for a good pint and bite to eat ?

That's an 11am start - you'll probably be near Greenwich by lunchtime (unless your lunchtime starts at 11). There are a few riverside pubs on the way but the very best beer pub en route is the Dog and Bell pub in Deptford, Prince Street. It's on the NCR route, serves a selection of well-cared for cask ales without the usual London surcharge, and is pretty bike friendly. Greenwich and Lewisham Cyclists use it for meetings so one of the ride leaders is certain to know where it is. It's not really a food pub though. At the end of the ride there's always the Greenwich Union, Royal Hill - local micro-brewery (Meantime Beers, I think they're called) that does decent food and good beers - though I reckon their bottled beers are better than their draughts. Their beers are brewed at the Old Brewery, which is on the grounds of the Old Naval College. They do beer and food and it's generally had good reports.

No, no confusion. I've been into the Three Hogsheads in Oxford and hte Cittie of Yorke in London.

Mystery!!! Mate & I use the CoY as a rendezvous when we get together every few months.

I'm certain they've got Old Brewery Bitter on draught in the long bar at the back. Maybe not downstairs in the cellar eatery area though.

If it stops raining long enough I'll run down Chancery Lane and check!!

Wow, thanks. You are right, I was thinking of somewhere at the end of the ride as an alternative to taking a packed lunch

My office used to look out directly onto the extractor fans and small yard at the rear of the CoY - very smelly and noisy.

I had always thought that Old Brewery was on draught, at least in the big bar at the back. The wheat beer was pretty ordinary and took about 15 minutes to pour a pint.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

I may be remembering wrong - or it may have been off when I went in. But one bitter? That's not a pub. The Counting House on Cornhill (Fullers, of Chiswick) always has five or six.

Thanks to everyone who gave us ideas on where to go. The bad news is that there wasn't time try even a fraction of the pubs - SWMBO put her foot down on seeing London through the pubs.

Thanks to Alan Whicker who recommended the Mitre. Took a bit of finding because in my minds eye I could see a golden mitre on the lamp post. I was standing trying to whether to carry on looking, when the Better Half said "I can smell BEER", we turned around and right behind us was the alleyway! Had a couple of good pints there and when we left I saw a blue mitre on the lamp post.

We adopted the Harp as our temporary local, it is as good as Alan said, plus we found interesting people to chat to.

Alan also recommended the New World which was excellent, best Chinese meal I have had in years, since I lost touch with my Chinese friend.

Thanks also to ttcycle who recommended Wahaca; what an experience that was on a Friday evening. The place was bedlam but we had an excellent meal, very different to the normal Mexican and way better.

Next time we go, we will plot all the places on a map, as we only realised too late we were near Wardour Street and missed a couple of places.
