Which chain do I buy?

Need a 9-speed chain for my Deore-equipped Thorn Sherpa. I'll want to use one of those tool-less connecting links with it, so I guess I buy Sram?

Or is there a reason to buy Shimano?

Buy shimano if you want to spend a lot of time pushing your bike.

A SRAM powerlink you can use for any make of chain.. you do not have to stick with SRAM chains.
You have choices... based on quality and cost.
I use wippermann chains for no other reason except the Germans are good at this kinda stuff and the ones I use never rust unlike a certain Shimano type which rusts evens if you breathe on it.
