Garmin Edge 200 looks good for the money. The Bryton 20 looks great value too, especially as it can monitor cadence too.

I like the idea of improving battery life in the iPhone too and that may be a cheaper option, then I just need to buy a cadence sensor for the Runtastic app.

So many options...

This thread has probably been done to death but I can’t find what I’m looking for so will try in the vain hope of finding some direction.

Whilst I track my rides on “Runtastic road bike” which is great for post ride info, it kills the iPhone battery to keep the display on for a long ride and it usually dies about 15 miles in. I therefore need a cycle computer of some kind to give me live info to monitor key info.

The main data I’m looking for is distance, current speed, average speed and cadence. I’d also like to be able to see heart rate (from my Polar FT7 heart rate monitor) if possible.

This should allow me to monitor progress as I (in theory) get fitter and control my pace on long rides.

The budget is flexible but I’d like to keep it under £50 as a starting point if that’s realistic and I don’t mind buying secondhand. I can go more if necessary though. Navigation would also be another nice thing to have, but I suspect that would put the price right up and I also may be better off getting a stand-alone unit.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul (or anyone actually),

So sorry to answer your questions with questions but I'm desperate!

I have the Runtastic Road Bike app but am new to cycling and cycling apps - and to forums for that matter. I need to cycle to work and was hoping I could use the app for tracking the session but also for navigating like say Google maps would do (after entering the destination) to actually get me there. Also, I too have an iphone, is there a way to keep the screen on for teh duration of my 6 mile ride? When testing it the display seemed to keep going to sleep after a minute or so.

Again sorry to hijack you post, but the help via Runtastic is non-existent.

Thanks
Dave

You should be getting hours out of a phone with GPS and the screen on. It sounds like your phone battery is goosed, so it may be worth getting that replaced as a first step.

As someone previously mentioned phone “battery anxiety” is sorted with an external battery. You can get a cheap one for £10 but I’d recommend the “Topeak power pack”. It’s oddly expensive at £60 for a battery, but it velcros to the stem and is well made. So I think it’s worth the extra cash.

One of the counter arguments you hear about the using your phone is “I don’t want a dead phone in case of an emergency” but because my phone is hooked to a battery I finish all my rides with 100% charge. I often start the ride with less charge and finishes fully charged.

For the other stuff I recommend Wahoo or Topeakstuff. I have the Wahoo heart rate monitor, it’s excellent. I also have the Wahoo RFLKT. I really like the RFLKT, I use it to displays my stats and use my phone screen purely for maps. If you’re not navigating or using maps then this would solve your problems as with the screen off I can get 5 hours plus out of my iPhone.

Topeak also do something similar called “PanoComputer”. You can run it as a standalone computer or paired with your phone.

If it’s just cadence your want then I’s suggest the “Wahoo RPM”. It’s tinny and if you use different bikes you can attached it to your shoe or even just put it down your sock. I currently use a Topeak one. It fine but looks bulky next to the Wahoo.

The assumption with all of this is you have an iPhone and it supports Bluetooth 4.0

I feel like a pimp pushing this post…. but I put my experiences is this post and others have added useful titbits. I hope you find it useful.

If you can live without the bells and whistles, the edge touring is a good shout, and costs less than the other one's in Garmin's range.

I ordered one of these yesterday http://www.wiggle.co.uk/cateye-strada-digital-wireless-with-speedcadancehr/ . For £65 you can get HRM and cadence . Would have liked a Garmin but can't really justify the cost

I had one of these already and got a Garmin Edge 200 to cover the GPS aspect, works well......
