After a 7 mile commute, I have to walk about 20mins through a busy hospital to get to my work area. This 20mins is usually spent squirming as I clatter past on cleats and hiding my groin and overflowing belly with my helmet( if wearing tights.).

I know I'm being silly, but still, can someone recommend some trousers that would remain practical for cycling but look somewhat 'normal'. I've tried getting over my hangup but not succeeded so far. I've seen several online, but is not possible for me to try on any locally, so any recommendations before I order.

I'll be buying these in the next few day:

You'll probably find something similar locally, but they're probably too hot to wear in the summer, so you'll have to ride more to get to the size and shape you desire!

Any normal walking trousers would do for that distance, just make sure the seam in the crotch is comfortable when sat on the saddle. I wear ones similar to this. They've got a bit of stretch in them which makes them even more comfortable. If you need padding, just wear cycling short underneath.

Ron Hill Bikesters are tight and light enough for cycling but not too tight to cause embarrassment when I'm on the train. Ideal commuting trousers.

I have exactly the same problem as you, though currently I only have a short walk through a busy hospital to get to the changing rooms. I invested in a pair of these, they are not cheap, but the black version almost pass for 'normal' trousers, much to Mrs B's chagrin I took a shirt in to work and went to a meeting wearing said shirt and these very trousers. They are perfectly comfortable for riding and narrow enough not to snag the chain etc!

The Groundeffect ranchsliders look very nice - wish I could try them on or see them in person. But I wonder if it would be too hot when its warmer. I also thought of getting some (pricey) Gore overtrousers to wear over tights. Some have zip-off bottoms to convert to 3/4 trousers
