Yes it is one of those things where the feature is a very nice addition, or it is of no real use. For me, I love it because I like different data for time trials, hill climbs, road training, stationary training and leisure rides.

Presumably it's only the data displayed on screen - it still records everything.

Yes. I just like to have different data during different kinds of training and racing etc, but all data is saved for review post ride, regardless of the data on display.

A cheap way is buy a bryton 40 with hrm and cadence, if you can put up with dodgy customer service, it does exactly what it says on the box, new can be picked up for 170 ish and second hand about 80.

My only gripe is that I struggle to see the dotted route line with my dodgy minces, but I doubt that would be much better on a garmin, and deffo not worth the extra hundreds of pounds

If you don't want HR monitor and cadence then have a look at Satmap, brilliant mapping and meets your requirements regarding transferring routes and route lines to follow on screen

Cheers, will check it out.

ETA: That looks really good. Battery life seems much better than the Garmin, and screen is bigger and with better resolution. Slightly cheaper too.

705 Does the same as an 800 except tell you the temperature. Older case, no touch screen and the mount isn't as easy to transfer but works with Ant devices and does full mapping.

The 800 requires you to navigate through a few menu's (?) unless it can detect which bike automatically by the sensors it is paired with?.
I have cadence/speed sensors on both of my bikes & I'm pretty sure that once it detects which sensor is sending the signal either by turning the crank or rolling the wheel it switches to that profile. If you don't have these even on the 810 it's got to be a manual process surely as it has no way of knowing which bile it's attached to?

Have you considered the Etrex range? I've got an Etrex 20. It takes standard AA batteries so battery life is less of an issue (unless you're really planning on going to the middle of nowhere) and it will take Open Street Maps.
