I do occasionally like times of quiet contemplation but on the whole, I like to keep myself busy and occupied with something. I do tend to get bored. Waiting in queues in shops for example drives me mad. I just can't stand there peacefully wait. I would probably leave and come abck on a quieter occasion.

Is it that people who get bored easily simply don't enjoy their own company?

A very good question. I think we've probably all met people who cannot stand to be alone. Is it because they do not find it easy to fend for themselves?

I certainly have met such people. I have come to the conclusion, and I fully admit I could be a million miles from the truth, that they cannot handle being alone. Whether than equates to not being able to enjoy you're own company, I don't know.

No. No it couldn't. I'm not even necessarily asking about the same person living one or the other life. To perhaps re-phrase it; which life do you think is more fulfilling? A life full of excitement and stimulation, perhaps in a vibrant city where you have a jet-set lifestyle where you're constantly doing something or going somewhere but during the inevitable quiet times, you get depressingly bored? Or a life perhaps living on a remote croft where each day is pretty similar to the preceding one in which a day-trip to the city once a year is relished and anticipated for months and months on end?

I ask because I've had cause to live both types of life and each has definite merits.

I think it might depend on which you lived first.
I think if you lived a life of bungee jumping and beach parties and then you moved to a remote croft where every day consisted of setting off out of your solid oak door into the drizzle with your trusty walking stick to take your german shepherd for a walk in the hills , then you might miss the high life that you used to have.

Same as if you were a monk - I think a person who had previously been a diving and snowboarding instructor with a sideline as a DJ wouldn't do quite so well at it as somebody who was previously a scottish mudpacker.

That said, living on a remote croft would probably suit me, as remote normally means hilly, and hilly means good cycling

I would love to see the world through your eyes one day! I really would!:laugh:

Bonj, have you never met anyone that enjoys and is fulfilled by their job? Even 'cake shufflers'? They do exist. Admittedly rare in this day and age but they do exist.

Well I sometimes enjoy my job. Not all the time, but often it's quite intellectually fulfilling.

Well, what are the most remote places inthe UK. Devon & cornwall, wales, scotland. What are the most hilly parts of the UK. Oh yeah...
It's not just coincidence! It's because it's easier to build cities on flat land. Settlements built on flat land expand more.

   but even the packers are moving around, watching, listening, maybe talking...... its all stimuli.

er.. well, no - at least they shouldn't be. They get bollocked if they don't shuffle 90 cakes per minute. I've been there, done that.

I didn't mean moving as in running up and down the aisle's, I have worked in similar environments and there are still things one does to provide stimulation even in the most tedious of situations.

Scotland? Oh, you mean remote from London I suppose. I'm amused by the idea of Glasgow and Edinburgh being 'remote'.

I'll see your Cornwall, and raise you the Fens...

I'm in the generally quiet camp myself, I can sit and do very little, I can sit on a train for 5 hours just watching the scenery go by. Although I generally like some aural stimulation - radio or TV normally when I'm at home on my own - I may be reading or knitting at the same time, but like some noise for company.

I'm a bit the same with money. Never had much, so can be delighted by the smallest cheapest gift, if it's chosen with care.

glasgow and edinburgh are pretty much the ONLY cities in scotland, ok you've got aberdeen and dundee but they're not that big, they're more like towns. And scotland's nearly as big as england... if not as big. Definitely fewer cities per sq km than england.

Fens? like norfolk? lincolnshire? east yorkshire? don't think that's particularly hilly is it....

Trains, i agree that's fairly interesting as you've got constant scenery flashing by. Bit like watching a film in a philosophical sense...
