Please could anybody give me any advice on which hardtail mtb to buy.I have a budget of £900.
I will be using the bike for bridlepaths, riverbanks, canalpaths and some road work. Maybe some single track work when my fitness levels have improved.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

How about one of these, should do what you want, and would be perfect to get more into trail riding as you get more drawn into this off road thing.

why would you get that when you could get a rockrider 8.1 for £500 with a better spec the only thing your paying for on the orange is the name especialy seen as the are 2 or 3 big frame manufacturers so chances are they are made in the same place. plus you get a 5 year garentee on the rockrider frame and 2 years on any bits!!

I yearned for the Mondraker Finalist (£850 various places) but in the end I went for the http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/products/revolution-triad-1-0-11 Revolution Triad 1.0 (£499 with free delivery from Edinburgh bike co-op). I've ridden it in forests, through farmland, dropped it in a bog and and dragged it over rocky mountain paths - all in the first week. Loving it! With hydraulic discs, air shocks and a decent chainset I couldn't find a better deal.

Loads at that price point, all the fun of trying as many as you can and plumping for he one with the sexiest grips or paintwork, or tyres, or some other such subjective nonsense. Or just get a Cube Ltd or Genesis Core 40
