There is nothing much further south, Barcelona is tourist hell and lower, Valencia is very nice indeed but maybe a 2 mile trek to the beach from downtown.
I believe that the Spanish now have omnibuses:ohmy:
If you've been to Portugal, Spain will disappoint you.

Then again, if you managed Alvor with its golfing tourists and Irish pubs you might like Spain.
TBH we saw very few 'golfers' even though the hotel advertised its golfing connections. Re Irish pubs......there were a few and Im sure they would be lively later on but we didnt get any of those vibes. It was a nice pleasant atmosphere.

I forgot, Alicante is a great little city too, not as many things to see/do as Malaga but enough.......a great historic area, very few Brit tourists, it's own beach and marina and the best beach in Spain just around the headland, Playa de San Juan, where I ended up staying a few years ago. It has miles and miles of beautiful white sand but..........not much to do apart from visit bars and restaurants. Staying in Alicante and making few visits there would be a great holiday, there is a very regular tram service to San Juan that also goes all the way to............... Benidorm............Alicante has superb local nightlife, eating/talking/drinking goes on until the early hours packing out some downtown streets, I went in January this year and wondered what those streets would be like, they were just the same but with the locals wearing coats! I can recommend the Santa Cruz area as a place to stay, Google it, I've stayed here in Alicante with spectacular views from the rear over the whole city, castle, marina and sea.

Malaga airport has a train taking you right in to the centre and Alicante has the C6 bus every few mins, so no hassle transfers with easy access from every UK airport. Both places would make a great holiday destination IMO. :okay:

We stayed near Torres on the coast and inland near Alhama de Granada which I preferred as it's the 'real' Spain food and wine were excellent it's so different to the crowded bits.
Maybe I feel Alvor has been spoiled. When we were visiting 20 years ago it was much less touristy in terms of pubs and restaurants. The main strip down to the sea isn't a patch on what it used to be. We still love Portugal though and there are plenty of more balanced areas.
"More balanced areas" such as ??
That was our first visit and we would like to go again. Visited Aberfuira, Lagos and portimau (spellings?) but wouldnt fancy staying at any of them.

L'Estartit on the Costa Brava, and dive the Medes Islands
Went diving there for a week. Some of the best and deepest dives I have done. Got to 44 metres one dive and still had good viz.
The nearby town though was like Blackpool.

I know................it's still a hassle and if a beach was to be a large part of my holiday then Valencia is not ideal. I cycled to it most days from Carmen, 30+ mins tootling down Parque Turia then picking up the cycle path. It's certainly a lovely city and the old river bed makes it special IMO.
