Interesting that all of those named in this thread are from the sciences and technology end of things.

Especially so since when it comes to say the mathmos of physicists, very few really understand what they're doing.

Kinda weird gthat no one from the arts or humanities gets a look in.

I'm sure you recognised Hannah Arendt.

Well no I wouldn't have recognized the photo. Would you?

I'm pretty sure though that she died quite some time ago and I kinda thought the OP was looking for peeps still alive.

In any event, why Arendt and not say Anscombe or De Beauvoir or even Greer?

It's a bit more complicated than that...

Zizek and vos Savant have been put forward, and (probably not entirely seriously) Fred Housego.

I suspect it's because no-one really understands what they're doing that people think mathematicians and scientists are "brainy". Personally I'd be looking for polymaths - people who have made a real success in two or more different fields rather than a narrow success in just one. Marcus du Sautoy is closer to the bill - he's a top-notch mathematician who is also able* to communicate to the rest of the world.

*Ah. Is he? I understand him, but then I have the unfair advantage of a pure maths background.

I wonder it it's Elon Musk. That guy is like Ozymandius from The Watchmen, only I don't suppose he is as good at fighting or as fast.
